My Prejudice

At 9 years of age, I was given an old beat up Conn cornet for Christmas. That inspired my love for jazz. I was given lessons by Jimmy Staluto for $2 a week. I practiced, but my overwhelming desire to play jazz was nurtured by a couple of 78 records. One of them was Bunny Berrigan's, "I Can't Get Started". (https://youtu.be/D1ycvlgrKW4) Among my recordings were a few by Louis
Armstrong. To be honest, Armstrong was never among my favorites. My real practice was playing with those and many other recordings.

Here's a classic Berlin concert by Armstrong. I've learned to appreciate him. As I watched the PBS/Burns series on Jazz, I learned a great deal about Armstrong, his immense popularity and singular contribution to the development of jazz. (Sorry Louie - you deserve more from me)

56'?? Let's see, I was a sophomore/junior at college, I'd take a bus from Teaneck NJ to NYC, walk to Birdland and listen to jazz all night for $2. What can I get for $2 now? Maybe a pack of
Spearmint Life Savers or 1/2 gallon of regular gas?

I'm still happy!!

Mark, I played in a orchestra that was fronted by Roland Ernest who took over Bunny’s band in the early fifties.
Yes I’m getting old🎷🎷

Thanks, Bob! In the early 50's I was playing in a small group at weddings, dances and gatherings. On my first gig, we were paid $2!
