Baby Grasshoppers???

These baby grasshoppers, if that is what they are, were also prowling around my potato plants yesterday. Seems a lot of bug activity going on there less than a month before I get to harvest them and see how they turned out.

Yes. It's hard to know the species when they are this young since they tend to look similar at this time. But they are in the spur-throated family, and could be differential grasshopper, red-legged, or two-striped grasshopper. You've seen the adults of all of these since they are very common.

Thank you very much Mark for your knowledge and willingness to share it. I have a hard time remembering the names of birds, insects and birds and here you are a wealth of knowledge. I sure appreciate it.

Dennis, very nice series of the little critter. I noticed that it is "pooping" in the fourth image. Here's something to think about. Entomologists estimate that there are some 10 quintillion insects living on Earth at any given time so there's a lot of pooping going on..! Words to the wise, wash your fruit and vegetables before you eat them.

Thank you for bringing that up. I had meant to ask the readers/members IF that was what was going on. Unfortunately due to me trying to do too many things at once along with having a short term memory occasionally, like forgetting why I went into the kitchen, did not ask. But, YES, that is exactly what I thought too. I do wash my fruits and vegetables before eating and this photo is a great reason why.

Thank you again,

Dennis
