I was attracted by the sheen of light reflecting off these leaves more than the leaves themselves, so I converted it to B&W, hoping that would make that sheen more important in the photo. What do you think of it?

Agree. Closeups of leaves in B&W can help make closeups of leaves more interesting.

Black and white does feature the sheen.

Very nice. I agree, the B&W makes the sheen, along with the repeating shapes, the star of the show.
