I miss the day when I could just go to the store and buy what I need.
I know what you mean. I think part of the problem is that there are too many "things." You need specialty stores to find exactly what you want these days. So many things need adapters.

Have you considered the thousands of items a local store could never stock, or that your local store would involve considerable travel?
I am a ham radio operator, over the years I have collected many adapters. Most have become useless as time has progressed.
I may have and will be happy to male it to you. Let me check and send me a PM with contact info. I am a ham and have a zillion adapters

Oh, boy shows you what typing errors...male should be mail..sorry abt that Neil
Yes, very frustrating......
To add to it, some stores web sites list dozens of places to get an item.
I just want to know if THAT STORE (near me) has it IN THE STORE,
not a selection of 25 places to MAIL ORDER it from........
And some website search engines are totally worthless....
6 pages of everything BUT what one asks for.

But many things that
used to be commonly stocked no longer are......
I can have a pair of 'em on my doorstep tomorrow for a total of $5.89 (plus tax - maybe) from Amazon Prime. If you count the real cost of driving a car a mile there's probably no way to get what you want any cheaper. Of course you do have to wait a day . . .

If the store is a mile or three from my house, and I'm out and about, easy to stop.
Depends on the item. USB cable adapters are hit and miss. Easier to get on-line.

Count the cost of subcribing to Amazon prime.
Your view on this depends on which side of the counter you worked on. My dad had a good sized hardware store in a tiny town of twenty five hundred people and handled everything from delicate crystal figures to horse collars. When it came time to inventory everything it would take a week. I got to count all the nuts and bolts from 1/8x1/2 to 2x12. The worst was silver saddle spots. They come in several different sizes. I can't remember all of them but there were 1/8 to an inch with a thousand in a box of the smaller ones.
I can't remember anyone coming in and asking for something that we didn't have. The trick was to remember where it was.

There was a great family hardware store near where I lived in Florida.
If they didn't have it, you didn't need it.....
And yea, finding stuff was probably a quest.
Well I know the majority of people don't care if we have no local stores any more. They enjoy the online shopping and it's the reason why all the local stores are gone.
Well you have to accept it because you're in the minority.
