I'm having second thoughts about my newspaper subscription. I have a subscription for six months for $1.00. Every day, I read about someone killing or trying to kill someone, and this is locally. In today's news, a man got into an argument with his wife and shot her with his crossbow. She was holding their three-week-old baby at the time. Hubby tried to prevent her from calling 911, and he took off in his "red Ram pickup truck." When help arrived, the baby was dead, and the wife was taken to the hospital. The man was soon caught and jailed.

A man tried to kill his friend by bashing his head in with a hammer, and a local jury found a murder suspect not guilty. In more distant news (MA) a couple who celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary over the weekend was stabbed to death in their home during a burglary.

Today I'm more surprised that ANYONE Was Charged with a crime.
As for the $1.00/day "Newspaper Subscription". That is the dying gasp of yet another anachronism circling the drain. >Grin*<
Jerry, please cheer up, and . . . .
Smile,

The news media outlets via their workers thrive on extremes, the worst of matters, catastrophe, controversy, sensation, one-sidedness, and alarmism.

These outlets also revel in bias, lies, and propaganda.

They prefer smears, hate, slants, and vilification over fairness, objectivity, and balance. They deliberately omit controlling facts that would mitigate the import of their reports. This approach overall amounts to intellectual dishonesty.

Further, they appeal to feelings and emotions instead of presenting verifiable facts and information in a context of reason.

In short, the news media workers lack intellectual training. But they know how to string words together to produce interesting sentences. In this environment, true reportage suffers.

At bottom, under the color of newsworthiness, these workers ill serve the public in a democracy.

A sad state of affairs indeed, but to me it looks like they're giving us (the country) what we want. If good news sold, I think things would be different. Jerry Springer for example.

The newspaper coverage where I am is not so gruesome though the same may be happening. But I hear or read the State Wide, National, and Intetnational news and it makes me ill with all the death, violence, and hate. And of course it is in my face too on the Web and TV. TV or film drama is ok.

For my part, I tend to skip the superficial news offering. One click of the mouse device takes my computer display elseware.

Put another way we no longer have a free press in this country

I read the first post as "six months for $1.00". I didn't read that as "$1.00 per day", that Jimmy T said. So, I'm confused. But it doesn't matter, I'm just an old fart and that type of thing happens to me.

$1 for six months, in the hope that you’ll forget to cancel. Then, they can bang your credit card for an outrageous amount.

I disagree! We have a free press, but we also have a large number of people who are poor consumers of the news. Can’t discriminate between fact and fiction. I don’t like the news about death and destruction any more than the next guy, but most who don’t like that kind of news won’t lift a finger to address, with their reps, the root causes of the behavior being reported.
