I got another class action check yesterday. This one was about a Roundup (weed killer) case. The check was for only $26.18, but I've received about $400 over the years. Never turn down the chance to join a class action lawsuit. I bet the lawyers got twice what I got.

Years ago I had the opportunity to join one of those against a well known lawn mower manufacturer.
Someone sued because the actual horsepower of the mower was JUST UNDER the stated horsepower, JUST...
I suppose the manufacturer simply rounded up.

The mower worked great for me. Hadn't noticed, didn't care.
I opted out....

I once received a class action check for $0.02.

That's what happens when a payout is divided among a million+ people...

Interesting. Many legislators (I won't say which party) say we don't need health, safety or environmental regulations because the court system provides relief from offenders. Trouble is, 99.99% of us can't afford a lawyer to help us if a product or business causes us injury or harms our environment. I suppose class action lawsuits are an example where the court system is "regulating" businesses to protect the little guy but as others have said (sorry Jerry) it does seem a bit sleazy to join one just to get a check unless you were actually harmed.

Yea, I'd call the lawn mower one frivolous.

No they got about half of what you got but... there are few of them and many of you in a class action suit. So their share could be in the millions.

Were you harmed by the product or just increasing their costs for the rest of us to pay? I would not sell my integrity for $400. If you were harmed disregard my comment.

The vast majority of class action lawsuits are frivolous and solely designed to make a bunch of legal fees for the lawyers. Some are valid…but they’re few and far between.

The lawyers get about 30% of the total settlement. Usually many millions of dollars. If the total settlement is 50 million, the lawyers get 15 million. If there are 15 lawyers, you do the math. The lawyers benefit from the lawsuit. The people involved get peanuts.

I joined a class action some years ago. I was “harmed”, but was not confident that I would receive anything… and certainly not any thing significant. It took a while but my check was in the thousands… very close to the amount needed to repair the harm.

My mother in law had joined one… we discovered after her death. She received a check in the hundreds but it was not enough for us to cash her check… since we had not had to probate her estate and that would have cost considerably more than the check she received.
