The mayfly is a 'dun', an interesting 'extra' stage in development - not an adult, not a nymph (naiad), but an intermediate that sheds its skin, including on the wings, to become adult. I've never understood how this developed unless solely to feed the fish. The mayflies are the only order of insects that do this.
