Buy a Tivo? $400 on tivo.com site.

Spectrum does not support Tivo any longer. I've had one for over ten years.

I want a physical box (DVR) that lets me record TV, preferably automatically, week after week.

My online recording experience isn't very good. Regardless which service I tried, I can't record very many shows. Some shows have a "RECORD" button, but many don't. I can watch it, but I can't record it. Spending $300 a year to do that is kinda pricey. I don't know if Spectrum's DVR would record shows whenever they are on or if I would have to program it every day.

What I would like to do is what I've been doing for the past eleven years - tell the machine to record a show whenever it's on.

Jerry, here in my area, Spectrum is very good, not 100%, but very good. The DVR can be programmed to record a series or single show, series are recorded automatically when set up to do it, it asks you if you want to record
the series, it works very well.

Thanks. I might wind up going with their DVR.

They work very hard to make things difficult. With my new arrangement, I was supposed to receive a faster modem and a DVR. After almost two weeks, I've received nothing, so I called.

Nothing has been sent, but the modem will be sent today. As for the DVR, that's almost funny. Although I'm being charged $4.99 a month for Cloud DVR, it's virtually worthless, so I dropped that. If I want a DVR from Spectrum, I'd have to pay $10.99 a month rental plus $12.99 a month for service, plus tax, of course. That would be close to $300 a year to record TV. I declined that offer.

I asked about using my own DVR. She was uncertain, but she thought the $12.99 monthly service fee would still be charged. After half an hour on the phone, I saved $5.00+ a month, and I'm getting a modem.

Looking on Amazon, I don't see regular, name brand DVRs. What happened? There are over-the-air recorders and security recorders from companies I never heard of.

What issue did you have with their cloud DVR? I have YouTube TV with cloud DVR and it works great.

I feel your pain about Spectrum. I used them when I worked at Boeing in Seattle. Since I needed TV and Internet, they were the only choice at the time. There were always problems with billing and connectivity. Since I have Spectrum now, I do get 500 mb downloads, but I need to upgrade my switch to at least a 1 Gb switch. Right now I have a 100Mb switch, and I was informed that is why my internet speeds are lower (~95Mb download). I only use cable for my computers, but use wi-fi for streaming tv only. Cell-phones and tablets excluded.

Jerry,
Spectrum recorders can be programmed to record "new" or "ALL" shows of your choice. i.e. Law & Order, you can choose to have New only shows, or all that are broadcast on that channel. Depending on the box, you can record many shows to keep until you want to watch them. The machine will show you on the TV screen what percent of FULL it is.

I don't watch ANY shows when they are scheduled. I only watch shows I recorded. I hate ads and want to skip them all together. Like an earlier commenter, we record golf and other events. We just don't look to see who won. This way, we skip the ads and see all of the show. On sporting events we extend the time by 1 hour because they seldom end on time. When we are done, we delete that show. Simple.

My husband and I don't always like the same shows. We each have our own DVR box and CD players. You don't want to know what our monthly bill is, but we don't argue over shows and sometimes record the same things.. Who cares?

Is Spectrum perfect? No! But it is the best service over all the dishes and satellite services. They answer the phone quickly, have people who can usually help and set up repairs when needed. You don't pay extra if they have to come out. We've been using them (through all the iterations and purchases) for 34 years.

Thanks. With Tivo, we can watch what was recorded on any TV in the house. I don't know if Spectrum's DVR will work that way.
