Summer Heat

Just read where 2 people died in the Big Bend National Park from heat exhaustion. It seems hiking in the desert at 119 degrees is dangerous. The 14 year old son died on the trail and the dad making it back to his car drove off a cliff. I go to the park a couple of times a year and the literature suppled stresses taking enough water and sun protection. On a side note, if you go to the park in the summer, hike the Chisos basin, its altitude is 5000 feet plus and the temp is usually 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the desert.

And if you're a flatlander, drink a lot of fluids to prevent altitude sickness...

I didn't see your post when I made mine 15-20 minutes later. It's a terrible tragedy that should not have happened. As hot as it can get on the desert floor, I'd never go hiking there in the heat of the day. As you've mentioned, the loop around the Chisos basin would be a great place to hike. Very picturesque as well.

About a month or so ago, my wife and I enrolled in a local gym called “Hotworx,” which has franchises all over the country. Each session of 30 minutes is in an infrared sauna (dry heat) set to 125°F and is given by a virtual instructor on a TV in each of the sauna rooms. Each room can accommodate 3 people. Customers schedule sessions through an app on the cell phone. We sweat like a pig, but that's the whole point...health benefits...detox, lose weight, gain muscle, etc.
