Ok, my bad. It’s $45.00 per year per cam for recording. Cameras work live online at no charge.
They are $100.00 to purchase.

Starting to look into getting a security system for outside the house since we have been traveling so much lately. My questions for you all are:

1. What type of outdoor system do you have?
2. Would you purchase the same one again?
3. What do you like about the system?
4. What do you NOT like about the system?
5. What app does the system use to send the pics/video to your phone and what is the cost?
6. Does the system have a sensitivity setting? We get a lot of critters running around so not sure how sensitive these systems are and what will trigger them.
7. Does the system have night vision and how good is the video/pictures?

Any other info you can provide about your system would help!

We are thinking 3 or 4 outdoor camera's with a good clear picture and video (so higher resolution would be better). Thinking either solar powered or plugged into power since we are gone 3 weeks or more at a time. Not sure how well battery powered would work.

Thinking 1 on garage pointing down driveway, 1 on house pointing at the barn, 1 on barn pointing at the house and 1 on the house pointing at the pasture - we get a lot of critters running thru here like elk, deer, bear, coyotes, cougars, fox down to turkeys, pheasants and such....so it would be fun to get them on film!

My budget can go up to about $800 if needed but would rather stay around $500.

Thanks
Cindy

Sharon uses Brinks, one thing to think about is the L.E.O. response time, if you'er thinking about the system calling them.

Cindy...since this is in the news, I thought I'd bring it up. Be sure to batten down all the hatches when you leave so squatters can't find a way in without breaking in. I've seen a case recently where squatters found an unlocked window to gain entrance to a vacant house and it took the homeowner six months in civil court to get them evicted. Somehow, I would think, that if they had to break in to gain access, they could be charged with breaking and entering.

One thing that many seminary students do is "house sit" for individuals like you. They make some money this way (I don't know how much) and also get to stay in a home larger than their usually small apartment. I don't know if that's something that you might want to consider to help put your minds at ease while traveling.

Ring makes their own downloadable app which works well. Night vision (IR) is quite adequate.
Likes, two way sound, alarms, lights siren and decent picture.
Dislikes $30.00 permonth to record at EACH camera. (We only pay for residence front door) recordings only kept for 12 hrs.
We had our cabin cam at driveway but it felt like we were spying on any one who used cabin so moved it to back yard.
I would not get this system again without researching other system prices, our was a Christmas gift. $30.00 per cam is ridiculous. Per Month!
All numbers are from my memory and subject to fuzziness.

Edit: all alarms, sound, lights, picture, siren and recording can be turned on/off via internet.
I’m not aware of sensitivity settings and your critters would certainly sound alarm, songbirds set ours off if within ten or twenty feet.
I visit ours daily when we are out of town.
Hope this helps.

You should look into your plan. I have the Plus plan https://ring.com/protect-plans?utm_source=google&utm_medium=search-cpc&utm_campaign=evergreen-na-2023&utm_content=general-search-na-general-na&utm_term=na&gclid=CjwKCAjwhdWkBhBZEiwA1ibLmMJphGj_EOFG2YGOEnh4Cw7jRJtkOrdVyW3VvafRqZf0evB4ETLt2RoCUtAQAvD_BwE, which covers my five cameras for $100 per year.

One consideration is privacy. From what I've heard, your videos could be shared with a company somewhere.

I heard about that and it's more common in larger cities, we are in a rural small town and petty crime is the major concern around here....I guess that's a good thing. I have never heard of anyone around here house sitting.

Can't get to the nytimes article without creating an account. The privacy issue is more with the inside camera's and people hacking them. I really wouldn't think someone would be interested in watching my driveway. We will not have any inside camera's.

But I will add this issue to the list to check into....Thanks!

It's odd how that works. I had to disable the ad blocker that I don't have in order to read it.

Once upon a time, I was a home security salesman. When sales were down, I would break into people's homes and leave a business card and a brochure on their table to let them know that they needed a security system and that I could help them with it. Sales were great for a while, and I've been out of prison for several years now.😜

Blink was budget friendly and quite adequate for my needs. No hardwire needed. Installs easily. There are sensitivity adjustments as well as scene exclusions. Indoor and outdoor cameras. operates through wifi to a home base. Records, notifies phone, shows current scene and has both mic and speaker for off site discussion and allows off site review of recorded videos. Can be armed and disarmed. Have had it a year and a half and am quite satisfied. Would buy it again and am considering adding a camera or two to the system. Haven't had to change batteries yet. It's not a big deal but I don't like having to disarm it right before I get home to avoid a multitude of notifications and recordings of my arrival. You can pay for external storage of videos offered by blink or use a memory card and avoid the monthly fee. night vision is adequate but not great. The app for phone is a blink app.

We sell several units at Sam's Club where I work part-time. When I talk to people about systems I tell them the two main questions they need to have answered are: How many cameras do I need, and do I want a wireless or a wired system? All the units we sell are excellent and provide 1080p resolution. I'm sure there are units on the market that do not provide good-quality resolution but you most likely would not buy from sources that carry inferior products anyway.
Some other things to consider are: Do the cameras have infrared detection and can they "see" in the dark, do they have lights that illuminate when they detect movement, can you access the system through your mobile phone? When it comes to wired or wireless there are advantages to both and you need to read up on the differences to determine which is best for you.
As I said, Sam's is a good source and I would imagine BJs and Costco would also sell similar products if one of those clubs is more convenient for you.

Are you sure about that price.... $30/mon? I have the same system, front door powered by my doorbell and a plugin that I have installed in our garage or kitchen area depending on what we're doing... i.e. home or away.
I pay $80 a year for storage.
I have the front door sensitivity and acquisition area set up so the doorbell only registers if someone is about 7 feet from the door. If in the garage, the wide angle displays all three bays.
Even though I have very robust wifi, the idea that I can communicate with anyone at the door or anywhere else is almost comical. You'll notice that if you see a commercial for Ring, they don't promote that capability anymore.
Video quality is acceptable. The phone app has been revised a few times since originally buying the doorbell and is finally pretty good and intuitive. Albeit a little tricky, when setting up.
If you buy a stand alone camera, I recommend get the plug-in model. I bought the battery only and was charging it about every 10 weeks for a device that was shut off. Ring finally gave me the adapter, probably just to shut me up. That said, the customer service IMHO is quite good.

You are correct, I erred. It is $45.00 per year to record on one cam.
It is corrected earlier in this thread, but good to be double checked.

The waving of tree leaves and tall grass when there is wind can activate the cameras. So sensitivity should be a consideration.
