Rub-A-Dub-Dub...Look before you enter the tub. This is a small brown recluse spider that I found hiding behind the shampoo bottles in the tub when I was getting ready to shower. There are times when I believe we live in the center of their universe for I find them quite often.

So...into the pill bottle it went and dispatching in the kill jar to be posed before the camera for a focused stacking session. In addition to the "fiddle" on the back of their thorax, they are different from most spiders for they have six eyes instead of the usual eight of other spiders.

Amazing. I had one snuggle up inside my elbow and bite me a number of years ago; the wound at the time was so bad that the ER doc assumed I was an IV substance abuser trying to score pain meds. I WAS trying to score pain meds, but also antibiotics...needless to say when I was asked to fill out a survey about my visit I did not give that guy a shining report.

Thanks, SWFeral. Their fangs are quite small so they evolved a very potent venom. Unfortunately for us, it dissolves our flesh and leaves a nasty wound and infection.

If cleanly shaved and with a fresh hair cut... still not a beauty. Amazing detail, indeed!!

Thanks, Dpullum. I'm always surprised to see how hairy a specimen is when viewed under magnification that otherwise looks to be smooth.

That doc was an uninformed idiot. Unfortunately ER docs don't get much training in wound care.
You should have been referred to a hyperbaric and wound care center.

Thanks, Tinusbum. They mean no harm and they are beneficial in controlling insect pests. Unfortunately, they are so good at hiding is how we often encounter them unknowingly. Their fangs are ever so small that they barely puncture the skin and the bite goes unnoticed. Then the venom does its dirty work and the wounds can be nasty...very nasty.

I don't dispatch spiders for my collection; however, the brown recluse is the exception due to their ability to hide and an unwanted encounter.
