They've put in a decent shift so the R.A.F. has decided to put it's Hercules fleet out to grass.
A design formulated from a 1951 U.S.A.F. proposal the R.A.F. started using them in 1966.
After 57 years they've been replaced by the Airbus A400M ATLAS.

Flying a route a bit further South than expected I got caught with the sun to the side and in front of me (I had planned for the sun to be behind me). Here are the three coming over the Chilterns - just 15 minutes from home after an exhaustive 7hr. loop around the U.K. & N.I.

The final flypast.

Why would they get rid of a very good airplane? Nice photo of them.

Probably because the Airbus carries more and at a faster speed. C-130s aren't going away, though. They're the cargo version of the 1930's DC-3s that are still flying commercially. Like the DC-3, C-130's are the perfect combination of economy, capacity, dependability and ruggedness. Their only drawback as a troop carrier, is that they're noisy as hell, inside. On the other hand, I bet you won't see an Airbus land on an unimproved gravel runway.

You're right about being noisy and the unimproved landing strips. I've flown on a few during my Air Force time.

Here's one landing on a beach, pretty hard packed sand and probably better than an unimproved land strip.
If you like planes look up the You Tube channel, the author does some pretty good shots around the Mach Loop.
