Is there a way to...

I spent the last two (2) days setting up a new camera and would like to record all the settings so that if I ever have to do it again, I will have a record of how I set the camera up for my style of photography. I would think that the camera manufacturers would have a way of printing these settings out, so I don't need to recreate the wheel again.
Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Some cameras have 1 or more custom capabilities in the function dial that remember settings.

One possibility would be to create a text file, and enter whatever info you wish to save using Notepad or your favorite text editor. Then you can save it in any folder you wish.

What camera do you have? Some cameras provide the ability to save at least most of your custom setup parameterss to your memory card.

I’ve set up a Google Sheets file with type of shot and then manually enter the settings and notes. I refer to it only occasionally since it’s all about the triad of aperture-speed-ISO.

Here’s what I do with settings save & load functions for my CANON R5 bodies: https://youtu.be/tHlItW0W9bw

I’m assuming here, but surely the other major manufacturers have similar capabilities?

This is just what I was looking for. However, my Canon R8 doesn't have this feature. Bummer.

Thanks anyway.

In a previous post you mentioned having a Canon 6D Mk2. (see last line in this post for R8).

I looked at Ken Rockwell's review for that camera as he is a stickler for cameras that have the ability to save custom settings such as Nikon's Fn buttons. He did not mention this ability in the review for your camera.

However, in looking at the photos of your camera in his review I noticed two settings on the mode dial...C1 and C2 that I assumed would be for custom settings. I was correct in my assumption as through Google I found articles and YouTube videos on how to save your settings to those two selections. The following is an article on how to do that:

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=14068&Title=Custom-Shooting-Modes-and-How-Bryan-Configures-C-Modes

Here are the results of my Google search that also show the YouTube videos on how to use those settings:

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-m&channel=ts&q=canon+6d+mark+ii+c1+c2&oq=canon+6d+mark+ii+C1&aqs=heirloom-srp.0.0l5

Ooops...I just noticed you posted as having an R8...well, I tried

UPDATE: I just noticed the R8 also has the C1 and C2 settings on the mode dial.

Won't the C1 & C2 settings do what you want to do?

Thanks for your input. Yes, I have a Canon 5DmkII, 6DmkII and now the R8 which all have the custom funtions buttons (C1,C2,) which I have used on all of these camera.

What I was looking for is a way to download (Record) all the settings I have changed to the button, dials, etc. in the camera so that if something went wrong I can reset these.
It looks like the R5 has such a function where it will write all this to a flash card. That data then can be saved in case of a desaster or transfered to someone elses R5.

Thanks for your efferts to solve my problem.

Shoulda bought a Nikon.

My Nikons can save the settings to the camera card and easily restore them.

It's not a perfect solution. If you reformat your camera card the settings are gone from the card.

What Nikon (and other brands) needs is a way to save the settings in flash memory. You can do a 2-button reset to get to the factory settings. What is needed is a 2-button setting to reset to user settings. Were that available, there are other desirable possibilities. For example a menu setting that would reset the camera to user settings every time you power up the camera. No more changing something and forgetting to change it back before you pick up the camera a week later and forget not only that you changed settings, but which settings you changed.

I think the Panasonic GH5 has a means to record the settings to the SD card that you use for storage. Just don't format the card when you want to delete files!

If you accidentally do that, it takes only about 10 seconds to save them back...

From what I just read the EOS 1D had a feature "load/save settings from card." Unfortunately the 1D was the only Canon with this feature until firmware version 1.3 gave that feature to the R5.

I believe this is exactly what you are looking to be able to do with your cameras.

Perhaps a concerted effort to get users to lobby Canon to add this feature to other models via firmware updates might help.

I believe Nikon has this feature as Ken Rockwell would make his settings for various Nikon cameras downloadable in his reviews.

That's true as long as you didn't change any settings and not restore them from the card. Restoration is purely manual.

That's one reason I would like to see the restoration of settings to be automatic or available through a two-button reset or ideally on power-up.
