Of course that means different things for different people.... but does anyone have specific suggestions for a novice which would produce satisfactory results? I checked out Ioptron and they range from $500 USD to several thousand USD.

What exactly are you looking for? If You want a goto tracking mount for not an awful lot of money try a Celestron CG5 Advanced.$700.00 or less new or you may find them used for as little as $500.00.
