I believe it is a grosbeak, but the Western Birds book I have does not show this one.

While I was sitting on my deck waiting for hummingbirds to show up, this character landed in the mountain ash 50 feet or so from me and stayed just long enough for several quick shots. I didn't take time to change the ISO setting, only dropped the shutter speed down to where the camera said it was exposed properly. Unfortunately, I ended up with severely overexposed images. Between that and having to make an extreme enlargements, the images are not all that great.

I do think it's a female grosbeak. Look at the shape of the beak.

It may be a young one. She hasn't the white stripe on her head.

Thanks to all for your assistance. The Rose Breasted Grosbeak is pictured in my book, but only the adult.

Nat Geo shows a juvenile female at first fall and has a white band over the eye and across the wings. If this photo was made recently this bird has not reached its first fall. Ergo: many of the distinct markings may not show yet.
