Not my usual sort of subject but this was just outside our back door, on a camelia bush. It was fascinating to watch them working on it for a day or two. The first pic is when I first noticed something was going on - the nest wasn't visible unless you got down low as they cleverly chose to build under a canopy of leaves. I don't know why it had the tunnel entrance initially but it fell off quite quickly. Interesting as it was, it had to go as any slight brush against the bush brought them out in numbers and, with dogs and young grandchildren about, it just couldn't be left, so late one night I did the dirty deed. Hope you find it of interest.

How did you accomplish the dirty dead? I ask because I have several attached to underside of a gutter?

This was only about 80mm dia when I disposed of it Peter, I don’t think I’d have tackled anything much bigger! I bought a can of wasp killer spray, went out at 22:30hrs when it was all quite, sprayed straight up the entrance hole for as long as I was brave enough, finished with a quick spray round the outside to soak the nest - and scarpered inside. Used about half a can. Following morning, 0700, all was quiet even with a shake of the bush. I cut it off the bush and dropped it in a waste bag. Dumped it in the dust bin.

Wasp nest: I just knock them down early in the morning or spray them with a wasp spray.
Hornets: I haven't had any problems with. they are another story!!

No, they were pretty standard wasps - I wouldn’t be found anywhere near a hornets nest!!

These are hornets nests, not wasps. You did well to get rid of them; hornets are much nastier than wasps.

No, definitely wasps John - you can see one in the bottom pic. It’s all the same nest, just various stages of build. I didn’t let it get very big.

Thanks Mike, I felt a bit sorry for them really - but I’ve seen our grandson stung and it’s not funny.

John : I googled Hornets & Wasp apparently wasp and hornets are in the same Family and OUR Wasp sometimes builds a nest similar to OUR hornets nest.
I have never been stung by a wasp or a Bee I have seen!! but I have been nailed by a little red wasp when I reached into a paper bag of fence staples, the little bastard hung on like it was drilling for oil, it didn't survive!! my hand and arm swelled up like a boxing glove almost to my elbow, been stung by Yellow Jackets too those little bastards are mean!!

Yes, a painful experience for sure! I was stung as a young child, on top of my head. The primary school had a great idea - keep bee hives in the children vegetable allotment! The master in charge took a look and told me to go home!! Don’t think they’d be that relaxed about it nowadays. I’ve had a few stings since, all from wasps, usually in the late autumn when they get a bit dozy.

Can be tricky. We had another that plagued us with wasps. I called the expert out - he soon located the entrance under the tiles of the roof. He treated the entrance and told me to stay out of the loft for at least two days. When I did eventually find it, buried behind boxes, it was about 12” diameter. Dead wasps everywhere!
