PSD pictures in Lightroom

I uploaded pictures from a trip several years ago into Lightroom. I was about to edit them but was surprised that some are JPG and some are PSD formats. The PSD pictures are grainier. Why are there PSD pictures?!!

How many years ago?
Did you maybe edit those with an old version of Photo Shop?
I think Photo Shop likes to save files as PSDs by default.

If you add layers to a JPEG, Photoshop will save it as PSD.

2020. They can be edited in Lightroom but because they are lower quality I want to understand where they came from. They are appear randomly throughout the album!

You probably should review the video tapes of your actions in 2020. You may see what you did to cause this discovery now in 2023.

Saving in PSD format should not cause any loss of quality.

Ahhh...
As to save the layers instead of flattening like in a JPEG?

How do you keep your video tape actions to find them easily. I just remember.

Odd they are grainier than JPGs. I shoot RAW, and sometimes save more complex edited images and PSD so I can later go back and redit the layers. All JPGs are only 8-bit. PSDs and TIFFs are usually 16-bit and as HDR up to 32-bit. I have no idea where your PSDs came from. I don't use Lightroom, only Photoshop and its apps. I have to Save As to save in any format but PSD which is the Adobe default. In Lr one usually Exports or Inports.

Again, odd as PSD should have the highest quality of image files. Somehow small highly compressed JPGs were saved to PSDs. I only work with the lowest compression on all JPGs. You may need help in finding all those setting, preferences, and defaults, i.e., someone who uses Lr and knows it well. Good luck.

So, if they were supposed to be JPEG, the PSD likely is less than 20MB and you can post and attach an example where we can make an inspection and informed comments, rather than wild guesses.
