Z8 vs a7RV

I found it interesting that the Z8 DR was so poor compared to an older and considerably higher pixel count camera.
Seeing as the Z8 is the same camera as the Z9 only smaller and cheaper especially the same exact sensor and firmware.

The Z9 and Z8 have higher frame rates than the a7RV. I think in a static situation like camera on tripod taking your time then both the Z9 and Z8 have slightly less quality image than the same 45MP Z7II.

So what?
Nikon users lived and died for years on DR is the holy grail.
Now that it sucks they ignore it and make excuses.
Remember the D850 really sucked on action, incredibly slow compared to many other cameras, and was only good for static subjects and totally failed in Video yet claim how great it was.

I said despite being higher end cameras in the Nikon lineup the Z9 and Z8 don't have the best image quality even within the Nikon lineup.
I used Nikon for over 40 years but I won't be buying any Nikon any more. As far as I am concerned Nikon doesn't make camera any more.

Most of the items listed in that table are irrelevant to me as a landscape photographer. The most important to me are dynamic range and lens quality. I don't care about video, or frame rate, or card write speed. It is a waste of money to pay extra for things you don't need.

Then you absolutely want the Sony over the Nikon.
With it's superior DR.
That is, as you say, critical for detailed and full depth photos.

That was in 2017, at which time it was state of the art for a high resolution camera. The next iteration (DSLR) would have been better, but any advances were applied in the mirrorless realm. And yes, from personal experience, the video sucks for two reasons. The autofocus in the video/live view mode is a joke. There is no viewfinder when taking video, a serious drawback. I own one, but I wouldn't spend money on one at this late date unless I only wanted to take pictures of static subjects. In that realm, the camera excels.

Absolutely wrong.
Other DSLRs had superb AF video when the D850 was made.
And now the Z8 has the holy grail of DR inferior to many cameras including the a7Rv.
Also review after review find the AF accuracy to be inferior.
The point jumps around just fine but the actual point of focus is more hit or miss than Sony and other cameras
So no the D850 was not state of the art in DSLRs it was very limited in capabilities.
Just marketing hype ignored the numerous failures as a complete camera even when introduced.

Well crud. How will I ever be able to sleep nights, knowing my Z8 and Z9 only have a DR from -3 to 17 vs a Sony tested in a sterile lab that goes -3 to 20? I don’t know if I can bring myself to ever get out in the field to shoot a sunrise landscape again.

Well, you should be nervous because Nikon owners informed the world when things were almost exactly reversed how far superior Nikon DR was and all others should give up.
So why is DR irrelevant and not important any more in the eyes of Nikon users when it was all that counted before?

Ha! How many times do you stop in the field and pass on a shot because you were worried about DR and not enough detail in the shadows? Nobody does. it's a marketing gimmick, and a false argument, just like lumping all Nikon users into one boat. Pull up any two pics of landscapes, one Nikon and one Sony and circle that +3 point EV difference with the naked eye for me if you can.

A marketing gimmick that Nikon users prayed to and was the defining thing that made a photo worth taking only with a Nikon solely based upon DR.
Now your tune has come around 180 degrees that for the most part Nikon is 3rd at best in DR.
Guess you forgot about the holier than thou you Nikon owners were in the recent past.

I may be holier than thou, but it would have nothing to do with cameras. Obviously someone with a Nikon camera abused you as a small child. Are you perhaps a cousin of Paul’s aka ChgCanon? I notice you both have serious inferiority complex regarding choice of camera brand with a bullseye on Nikon. I have experience with all the 3 majors even a Hasselblad. Never knew DR existed until reading here online. You do know there is more than one right way to take a picture, right? Any rivalry or them vs us is all purely a figment of an insecure imagination.
By the way, it’s the same with automobiles. I’ve owned a dozen brands and my primary worry was could it get me from point A to point B. Not whether some lab determined one car got .5 miles

No, just pointing out the hypocrisy of Nikon fanboys now that Nikon's cameras are lagging in DR so all of a sudden it is of no value.
Just amazing how once Nikon fails miserably in DR with their top pro models as well as consumer models that they poo poo DR as irrelevant now.
