Hi I recently posted some thoughts about camera gear to take to the Galapagos Islands and mentioned that I had had an unfortunate accident with my Canon 5d Mk11 and a 28-300mm lens, which dropped out of my backpack and into the sea. Since you all know that cameras and salt should usually be kept apart from one another, you might have guessed that both the camera and the lens were judged way beyond dead by Canon - and you would have been right. But there is a happy ending. The insurance people have just told me they will give me enough dosh to buy a new 5D Mk11 and a secondhand lens, and I have found a secondhand 28-300mm at exactly the right price to come in just under the insurance money. :-) I'm so thrilled, I thought that you always got done over by insurance companies, but mine has come up trumps this time. Just thought all you lovely people would like to hear some good news!
Congrats! That is an awesome insurance company!

Fantastic, there are times when companies really do what we all know they should but isn't it funny how it stills gives us a relief!!! Glad to here your news. We're you able to salvage the pics?
Glad that things worked out for you. Since you were treated well by this company, perhaps you could mention their name in case someone is looking for an honest company.

Hi deej, I had downloaded all the pics on the memory card onto a small external hard drive I carry on long trips just before getting onto the Zodiac we were travelling on when the camera and lens fell into the sea. There is Someone who looks after us!
Great news! Now share some of those pictures!

The company is Imaging Insurance based in Brentwood, UK. Probably not much use for USA people, but UK residents might like to know.

I would never be withjout camera insurance but a USED lens, and not new.
When my PRE OWNED EOS10d yes USED EOS10D was stolen I was given a NEW 60D

JR1, it was my fault that I only got enough money for a secondhand lens. The insurance form originally asked me to fill in the price of the lens, which I did, putting in the price I had paid for it as it was a secondhand lens. I didn't realise that I should have put in the price for the replacement cost for a new lens (£600.00 difference!) So Imaging Insurance paid me the price I had paid for the lens, but they didn't deduct anything for "wear & tear", which they could have done. However, they also paid me the full amount I had paid for my new 5D Mk11. Since then the price has gone down, since Canon has brought out the Mk111, so I am quids in on that. Swings and roundabouts, and I don't mind the secondhand lens: it comes from a reputable camera shop, with a 3 month guarantee and is in "Mint" condition i.e. almost like new. Lesson learned: always put in new replacement cost, not what you actually paid! Glad you got new equipment, tho - that was quite an upgrade, from the 10D to a 60D!

At least you WERE insured.
10D to 60D NEW for OLD insurance
I haven't gone through all my photos yet, nor done any PSE on them, but here is a Marine Iguana taken with p&s after 5D died.

Good for you
It is nice to hear good news. Enjoy your new kit
Congrats. Happy for you. It's always grief when gear 'dies'.
