I'm not your flower thing!

A composite of a hummer I captured a couple of weeks ago with a purple finch shot the same evening and an AI created background.

This is lovely. The color palette is well chosen, with the colors complementing each other beautifully. The subjects fit the background well. The placement of the hummingbird keeps my eye from wandering outside the frame on the right side as it otherwise would. Good work!

My eyes go back and forth to see who will strike first!!! A still shot that moves with visual action.

thanks Jared for your detailed critique. I really struggled with this one - I am still thinking it is too saturated/gaudy, but wanted to see if I could get the two birds together with a background that they might be happy in and have it feel good/right. I think I might have made the hummer too large and a million other things, but I liked the details and colors I captured on the birds and the original backgrounds were horrific, so the AI background and compositing was just an attempt to make them presentable and interesting and perhaps funny too. Thanks again!

LOL, a type of vibration with the back and forth. I think something is OFF about it all though, I wish I could pin my finger on it... Perhaps it is that very vibration that makes it interesting at first, but the eyes tire of it quickly.

My guess is it could be that the canvas isn’t large enough. Try a 5:4 landscape crop and move the birds a little farther apart, but with more space between them and the edges. Then try adding more light to the back of the hummingbird to bring it out of the shadows.

these are really good ideas. Thank you. The desire to get in close to place the focus onto detail ruins my compositions every time!! It usually must be closer or further away for me and I end up in that ugly compromise space. We can have it all, but we can't have it all!

I agree that a little more space on the sides would add to the image. The right side feels a little crowded. I would try rotating the hummingbird counterclockwise a bit to draw the eye into the frame a little more.

None of this is to detract from your very fine original. I often make changes like this and wind up keeping both because I like different aspects of the framing. Maybe I’m just indecisive.
