Spectrum - Never-Ending Problems

Remember when you just plugged a TV, turned it on, and it worked?

My latest problem with Spectrum involved an odd bill and an unknown cell phone. My last bill was $214, up from about $201. I received an email notice about a bill for $154. Why? I called Spectrum and tried to connect to a representative. "That will incur a $5.00 fee. Do you wish to continue?" NO! When I called a few days ago, there was no charge. The reduced charge was $60 credit for the $1,700 I paid for a cable box that I don't have - returned years ago. Their records go back only two months, so I received about $60 credit.

I spent almost three hours with Spectrum this morning between Chat and phone. Looking at my account online, I saw a mobile phone listed under the name of Amy, black iPhone, 2nd gen. The account is under my name and DOB, but in Goldsboro, NC. I looked up people with my name there, and they're all dead. I was transferred to the Fraud Department, and the woman said I sounded very good for my age. 🤣

I haven't been charged anything for that account, and they have a Visa card there for payment. Although the name and DOB are the same as mine, the Soc Sec number and email address are different, and that's a good sign.
The fraud woman sent them a letter to provide proof of identity.

Jerryc41,

We all need to be careful as there are companies masquerading as Spectrum (or other entities), who aren't them. They try to get people to pay for what Spectrum does for free.

So, when doing an internet search, you need to be very careful and make sure it is the company you are contacting and not these scammers.

I called the number listed on the statement. I've stopped auto-payment on most accounts.

If it says "auto pay" or "automatic renewal" I simply don't buy.

Unless it's something I definitely want, I don't use auto renewal.

We have about 8+ things on auto-renew.
But most I manually pay on-line when I get the invoice.

I've been on Spectrum for a number of years, paying 100 (99.99 grrrrrrr) a month for *just* internet (I need to have some "up" speed for when I upload lots of pics). Never signed up for auto-pay. Well, a couple of weeks ago ATT showed up...we've got fiber in your area now, interested? Oh, hell yeah, how much? Well, after wrangling and getting
every edge I could (age and whatnot) I ended up with 25 bux a month! Speed? 300 down and 300 up (it's actually more). They say the price will never go up (we'll see about that, eh?) and I happily signed up for auto pay. Man, it's sweet!

AT&T stopped short of laying cable here. I'd have to buy a house about an hour south of me to get fiber optic. Spectrum will charge me $80 for Internet along, but they add lots of "fees" to that. $25/month is ridiculous. It will be nice if they keep that price.

My current speed is 317.6 down and 0.2 up.

Maybe they'll surprise you one of these days, hopefully!

They surprise me, negatively, on a regular basis.

There is something seriously wrong with that upload speed. What does their SLA (service level agreement) say that you are paying for? I’m guessing it should be 300 down and 10 up. When you run Ookla Speed test, what does the latency and errors/dropped packets say? Also, is that directly off the modem, or through 1 or 2 routers?

BTW, I share your disgust with Spectrum, but at the moment, the only other option is AT&T and (a) they don’t want to run Fibre 400’ up my driveway, and (b) I’ve seen AT&T residential service out for over a week here and business service down for 3 days in the past year, so I’m not interested in that.

307 Down. When I ran Up just now, after installing the TP-Link Deco mesh, I got what you see below.

EDIT: I did it again, taking their suggestion to download the desktop app. Up is 0.56.

Interesting. I have Spectrum in Florida, and in North Carolina. Plans include cable TV, internet, modem, and router. They have always been polite and professional with any requests I make (like applying or removing vacation rate depending on where I am).

I recently swithched from Verizon Mobile to Spectrum Mobile (from over $70/month to $29.99/month) and am completely satisfied with their service. I was hesitant to switch because my NC home is up in the mountains. Apparently Spectrum uses Verizon's towers, so the coverage is about the same.

I'm not sure why service should be so different in your area.

All their people are very polite, although I have trouble understanding the ones in India. It's not the people who annoy me, it's their constantly increasing pricing. I dropped telephone, but there was no reduction in price. It's up to $214 now to TV and Internet.
