Nicknames are interesting. They came about because people like rhyming and playing with words. If you can't figure out how a particular nickname came to be associated with a name, see if it rhymes. Even today, we have cockney rhyming slang, which you encounter in English movies occasionally.
I remember an exchange from the TV show "Frasier."
"You're a typical man, using sex to get what you want."
"Sex is what we want."
