Nice work, Jim! Check your lens (especially if you are using "add ons"). Most lenses have a range that will not allow focus if too close.

Your lens focuses as close as 15" and at that distance with 70mm and f4.5 your depth of field is about .25 inches. It's also close to wide open so the lens is not at optimal sharpness. Try lowering your shutter speed, stopping down to something like f7 or 11 and shoot at least 2 feet away and crop as needed.
