The fifties and sixties until Vietnam broke out was a golden era. WWII was over, many of us were too young to remember Korea. The U.S. boomed economically. G.I.'s coming back from the war wanted houses, and there was a housing boom. Industry was booming, so there were jobs. I lived in Pontiac, where both Pontiacs and GM Truck and Coach had plants, so Pontiac boomed. Many of my h.s. friends went straight from graduation to the plant, getting married along the way. We had five junior highs, myriad elementaries and in '58 built the second large high school. There were, ofc, racial tensions, but it was mostly over the school district's dividing lines which resulted in mandatory busing in the early 70's, bus bombing by the Klan, and white flight. BUT, the 50's and early 60's, the beginning of rock and it's best era, probably the same with Country, and that new genre, folk music. Damn Vietnam!!! It ruined everything.

The fifties were idyllic, a wonderful time to grow up. Life was good and the future looked bright. For those of us who grew up then, this became our view of how America should be. That's why it has been so hard for us to see the changes that have happened since. Compared to that time, it has been downhill ever since.

I grew up in the fifties. Rock Around The Clock and Blue Suede Shoes, James Dean the original rebel. It was no big deal to see a pick up parked in the school parking lot with a shot gun and a rifle in the back window rack, probably would have a pistol in a holster hanging from it. The school closed on the first day of deer season and first day of duck hunting. My dad finished off the basement of our house and after every game of any kind, win or lose we would have a party. Mom would make ten pounds of bar-b-que, no booze only sodas. My older brother and I bought a 45 record player and a stack of '45s' and we danced until dad kicked the bunch out. We did that from my freshman year to graduation - Great memories thanks for reminding me of a really cool age

I was born in 1947. There will never be another time like the 1950s.When you're living through something you don't realize how good it was until you look back. We didn't have a lot but we had what we needed and life was good.
