Yeap, I remember the days when I could run. Knee problems came on almost overnight, no warning. One day I could run, the next barely walk, and I don't necessarily recommend knee replacements. In many ways it made the problem worse, not better. But as I told the doctor, I want functionality, not freedom from pain. Well, I got freedom from pain, but not functionality, at least not good functionality. Well, what can you do?

My wife the former surgical nurse will tell you that it depends on the doctor. She got to the point that she needed both of hers replaced the pain was so bad. She knew who to go to and had both replaced at the same time so she wouldn't lose her job. That was 2007. She's done great ever since. Stairs have been some problem for her, but they just slow her down. Otherwise, she has great function without pain. My Mom, on the other hand, was not so fortunate. My wife tried to get her to see the doctor here about her pain but she wouldn't do it. My Mom could be stubborn. However, you must understand my Mom. Her biggest complaint was that she could no longer get down on her knees to scrub the kitchen floor.

Yeah, I understand. In my case it was a little different because I was able to literally run into my 70's. I practiced Tai Chi and other martial arts for years. I had a little pain in the knee but my main concern was to be able to continue my practice. The operation itself went well, but the muscles in my right leg knotted up something awful after the operation, so now, even though my left knee isn't up to par, I could still run if not for the muscles in my right knee. Once in a while the muscle just does not hold me up and I have to fall forward onto my left knee. Once that goes, it is wheel chair time, which I just can't handle. My situation is a little bit unique. I don't care about pain, I care about being able to run and have good balance, which I just can't do anymore. But age is age. Just the way it is.

Steve, you can say that again. Left one is new and wonderful...I'm waiting for the right one to get bad enough (I think it already is) to replace.

I know that it's not quite the same as running, but have you tried race walking? Would that take the strain off your knee? My Dad was an athlete all of his life and as he aged he took up race walking. I used to bike and that certainly was not as hard on the knees. I'm not sure, though, about the muscles. I do feel for your situation. Best wishes.

I don't know why they make you wait until you can't stand it....and then it's two months before they can get you on the schedule. That happened to my wife and those two months were absolute agony, and she had to do a lot of standing as an O.R. nurse.

I do surveillance systems every now and again for friends and family and I am the one that gets into the attic. My left knee started hurting like hell overnight. I mentioned it to my brother and he told me that Osteo Bi-Flex triple strength + turmeric would work within 7 days or my money back.i tried it and by the next day the pain was gone.about 6 months ago I stop taking some meds to find out what was causing what I had that was causing me to clear my throat. After a week my right knee started hurting like hell.it took 3 weeks back on the osteo bi flex to fix the pain.this stuff works.

I now refer to mine as bad and badder. Right replaced twice, left once. They will never ever be the same or even close.

If our knees are giving out in our 60's and 70's, think about poor old Methuselah!!
