Probably because you have more control doing it in post than in-camera. Like the built-in "HDR option" offered in one of the models, it's a compromise and doesn't work as well as the real thing.
The serious pro cameras don't have "portrait, landscape or sports" modes.

Because all the gimmicks appear at the low end.

like everty thing Al ,next year they will add another little feature and all will be clambering to get it, a bit like tvs....cheaper cams will have all the features but won't be anywhere near the quality of a slr.

I think it's because by the time you've graduated to a DSLR you're doing these things manually. Sort of like the difference between sending your film to a lab and hoping they get it right and developing/printing the film yourself.

Sweep panorama is a marvelous feature. My own opinion is that fuji and sony, for example, have to innovate and add features in order to compete with the established brands. I can stitch (I have the "nodal point" ball head gear) and I can sweep. I'd rather sweep.

Sony a57 sweeping Lake Champlain
Sony a57 sweeping Lake Champlain...

A pano can be taken with any camera. if your talking about in camera stitching......as far as I am concerned, I would not use nor want that. I won't control over stitching. The same regarding in camera HDR.

Doing it yourself is always better, but it takes much longer.

Always covers a lot of ground......to be sure, when you have a good ballhead, pano head, and define the nodule point on your lens, your images will can be stitched in PTGui, Photoshop, and an host of other programs and done with little or no parallax....and no need to crop.

My observation and opinion from limited experience. When I borrowed a camera that did in camera panos I thought it was great until I reaized the limitations.
1) You had to go left to right
2) Pan slowly to get enough overlap (I do understand the necessity for that)
3) Can pan only in landscape mode which limits your vertical perspective
4) Only shoots a limited amount of exposures in a pass making a 360 degree pano impossible
5) Cannot do multiple rows

In camera panos are nice but pretty basic. I would rather have the expensive cameras put in other software than that for panos. You need pano software to make more than basic ones and if you have the software, why do you need it in the camera? Making the panos in the software later gives you more control over the product. To me, it is a nice gimic for snapshots but for an expensive camera it gives a limited product and I would rather have another feature instead like more fps in burst mode.
