Santa Maria Valley Steam Locomotive. Built by Baldwin in 1924 and lovingly restored by George Lavacot and his friends in a process that took 40 years, this steam locomotive is once again alive and thundering down the rails! The engine now lives with the Albany & Eastern railway in Lebanon, Oregon.

A beautiful piece of equipment! I’m in awe of the effort that spanned 40 years to restore it. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. My father started as a station boy at 16 and ended as a dispatcher for the busy Detroit/Saginaw Michigan area. I recall he took me to a near home line and we waited and watched the last run of a puffer belly go by... after that only Diesel Electric.

Steam an era gone by. Majestic machines and by the end so well defined from mechanical to aesthetics.

A masterpiece, great photos and thanks dwmor, I love these old steam engines. My father was an engineer and drove those old steam locomotives for the PRR, Pittsburgh to Altoona run for many years, lol, before I was born...Cheers

Soon she will be 100 years old, may her best days still be ahead. She runs better today then she did when she was built.

There is something magical and majestic about these old machines. Of the 4 original locomotives built and purchased for the Santa Maria Valley Railroad one was sold for scrapped, one is in a train museum in California, this one, X205 lives again, running the ribbon of steel rails and the other is waiting to be rebuilt here in Oregon.
