The butterfly is called a Comma, due to the little silver comma on its underwing which your photo nicely shows. It has a close relative called a Question Mark and guess what little silver marking it has on its underwing?!

Thank you for the id...I do not recall ever seeing a comma or a question mark around here...that is so cool! Question mark? I'm going to Google and read all about it.

Nice shots!

Your butterfly is the Question Mark Polygonia interrogationis, which is very similar to the Eastern Comma.

Comma versus Question Mark butterflies

Ripe or even rotting fruit will attract them. The caterpillars feed on nettles, and there is a non-stinging species for gardens- False Nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica).
