We all have our favorite images, this is one of mine. Debbie was a woman I met in collage studding for my MFA, she was an undergraduate in the fine art department at UTSA. Years later we reconnected and she loved to model. Deb really loved this image as it showed as a portrait what her eldest daughter Loren looked like, in fact it could have been a portrait of her daughter.

The image is made with the Hasselblad, 80mm T-Star Zeiss lens on Kodak 100 ISO print film. I did the print in my darkroom to capture the feeling of the soft natural light coming through the North facing window of my home. I liked the way the 2 1/4 square format created the need to make square images. This to me is one of the 'compositional elements that 'seeing' with the camera's format design helps shape the final image.

The beads photographed to appear like cheap plastic but were in fact of a certain ceramic type that was made in Poland just after the turn of the last century. Years later, another woman model friend was playing with them and ran them across her front teeth as one does with real pearl beads and remarked that they had a similar feel to pearls but had a heavier drag to them. She wanted to know if I would sell them? One has to let things go after you work with accessories for so many shoots or you run the peril of repeating yourself again and again. I gave her the beads, she was quite excited for the gift.

Of course, Debbie and I have been friends and collaborators for 35 years. She fell in love with the sofa and matching antique chair, so of course she has it now at her place. I always am kind to the women who make my art so much fun and successful.

Side note, Laren is now a PhD in Marine Biology, Debbie was stunned that I was doing Marine Biology while I was living in Monterey California, at The Hopkins Marine Station. Small world.

Lovely image. I am a bit confused by the narrative, is this a recent images? How old would she be? The colors are muted and my ake me wonder if the image would be even more striking in black and white, maybe sepia-toned?

Thanks, I did it on T-Max 100 as well and printed it as you said and did use Kodak Sepia Toner to make an 11X14 print. One of the great advantages of the Hasselblad was its interchangeable backs.

At the time I made this image Deb was about 35 years old. Now don't get all rattled, at the time she was playing hooky from school where she was a middle school teacher. Now Deb is in her early 60's and I think she is still a doll, but she like many women feels she is too old to model any more. But I do go have lunch with her at the local India Palace. She is also a grandmother three times over. Her daughter Katty gave me the name Timmers. Hatty is the artist of her two daughters and is a school teacher herself.

wow, a truly lovely image. I so wanted that camera when I was younger, but just didn't ever spend the money. I did have a twin lens Rolleiflex, no interchangeable lenses, but it did use 120 film, as did the Hassey

I've used a twin lens Rollei flex, great cameras, they both use Carl Zeiss optics!

This was with a 4X5 using Zeiss optics. Love them 4X5 cameras.

The largest I had was a 2 1/4 X 3 1/4 Speed Graflex.

I hate to be a dirty old man, but, I'd love to see more of her. She looks gorgeous, and very comfortable.

Let you in on a little secret about some women, they absolutely love being nude, and it is even better when there are men ogling them. That comes as a shock to many men because in the US we are raised to have this repressed regard towards women, but the truth is most women like having the male gaze focused on them.

Women are raised to be submissive and are conditioned throughout their lives to be a certain way, I call it being Eve. That is just fine by me, I have no problem with it as long as they keep that in their own back yard.

Then there are the other women, they are of a different type. These are the ones who are Parthenos. If you go by the silly dictionary definition of parthenos, you get the definition of 'virginal'. While an acceptable definition it really is a limited defining of this ancient word. Parthenos, does mean 'virginal', but it draws from an ancient tradition meaning the female is not owned nor controlled by a man. A more proper definition would be the women of the night, fence sitters, women of the wild wood, women of Diana, some call them witches, but they are more properly regarded as healers. This is difficult to understand, but look to that sacred site in Greece a top the Acropolis called the Pathagon and you now have a better grasp of what that structure's meaning for the Greeks who built it as a shrine to Athenian women.

Debbie Doll and VADA are both these type of women. Debbie divorced her husband early on and VADA is married to a vary traditional man who is in constant conflict with her over their open marriage. Most of these women are strongly attracted to women as well sexually. They are also extremely intelligent and are always wondering about their place in society, much of the reason they remain hidden from open gaze. They know the 'rules' imposed on society.

These women are often found making sudden outburst of observation in form of questions, it's why you must learn to be vary cautious around them because they are in that moment vary revealing. Recently I was speaking with VADA and she stated a simple truth in the form of one of those question followed by an interesting assertions. "Women are so completely crazy. Why do men put up with them? I cold not put up with that craziness!" Translated it means, they are fun to take to bed but after it's best to dump them! Sounds harsh but it contains great truth, also it sounds a lot like listing to a man speak. So I answered her they way men speak, "Women have most of the money and all the nookie!". Then followed with "Men go out on a date and they hope, women go out and they decide of there will be any action."

This is the sort of dialogue that I have learned to develop when speaking with women. It is why they like to be out of their clothes and show their deepest desires to express their sexuality. That is why much of my work has that spark and fire to it.

Over the years I have done a lot of work with women, but I will admit I am really only interested in working with women of the night, the ones who are parthenos. And yes, I read too much! LOL!!!

Now for more Debbie Doll!

By the by, in last five of Debbie, if you look carefully you can see The Doll getting aroused. I do not fool with telling women how to pose, I let them do what feels natural to them. Debbie is no stranger to me and to shooting with me. The first frame was her sliding into her 'space' and by the next she is in the grove. On the third I asked her to turn and show me more of her ass. Women always find things wrong with their bodies, the classics are their nose, often it is their boobs, but almost all think their ass is too big. So because I adore a well shaped ass like most men, I use it as a conversation point. So I'm telling her, and being honest here, that the two dimples at the small of her back are just divinely cute, but in typical bad boy mode like almost all men, there really is nothing quite like a well turned round ass on a women. Yes, this is erotic talk, it is naughty and babes like Debbie love to hear it told to them, but you do need to be sincere because they can see past deception!

The last frame is Debbie doing that universal female display, no verbal, that bent over stance is just plane language called "Mount me!". So sext, so erotic, all in just five minutes.

Thank you Don. Here is another one of those universal women poses that Debbie was doing, the universal pose called "Mount ME!" This time with Jenny KNOX.

KNOX knew Debbie's daughters, grew up with them in the middle school era, but had a falling out in high school. I never, ever speak about Debbie to KNOX, nor mention KNOX to Debbie, to each the other is DEAD! Women are so much fun! You just need to have a map of the mine field and your fine.

Thanks Doc. People express to me a desire to understand how and why I do what I do, this is a major part of what I do with my work, besides it's fun!

This post has it all and if i still had my home garage I would I would take down the tools from the workbench wall and think about mounting these beautifully posed women.

The first, Debbie Doll, is most unique, never have i seen a pinup with this alluring pose.

Hay there Sir Pullum! I have to admit that garages are fun places to work on photography. My garage has been for many years the location where I construct the many sets and accessories that I use in the studio, as well as the place where the large accessories get stored.

The garage is my little work shed where I make props like the naughty serving tray that Ms. VADA just went ga-ga over when I showed her it and began explaining the concept, she interuped me saying, "I need a pair of heals and only heals! And I think we should shoot it in the Cedar Closet because it looks so seedy! Oh, and you need to tie my arms behind me so I can only be a service naughty, ahh?" O said "You mean wench?" "Yes I need to be a serving wench! You could make these up and sell them to men's strip clubs so that the men get their liquor served by a bar maid, the tips girls would make!"

And just so you know, I have never nor ever forget the garden! In fact I need to get out there and attend to the plants before it gets too hot, just like my green buddies love it along with the humidity!

Of late I have had some trouble with low level thieves getting in when the garage door was open. So I did a decisive thing, I followed the ideas of the German sculptor Kurt Schwitters and built a facade in front of the garage door. It is called a Merz and if it is deemed a building or such it is referred to as a Merz Bau. (It is that MFA thing again).

So a buddy of mine who does building renovations showed up with a pick up load of goodies! Full length mirrors, smaller mirrors and several storm doors and two discarded sliding doors. These were pressed into use as part of the new facade and of course because the gorgeous tree in the front is busy destroying the corner of the garage and sending roots out into the drive way, I just had to build a platform, if you will a stage just above root level. A great new studio space for fun shoots! And yes, I have no little lady to tell me "Honey! The garage is for the car" or "You really shouldn't do that to the front of the garage, what will the city say?" No wife and no girl friend, but the women in my life love my artist home and, well they can't wait to model in the new spaces, like the garage facade. Witness Ms. VADA doing yet another Day of the Dead shoot on the platform.
