Do not go to Moab, Utah in July....
You will not make it far without a couple of bottles of water...We learned our lessons..
Ahh! The Desert, just one "s" short of a meal's reward. It has the strength and need to draw water from even the most redoubtable of hikers.
Great place, will have to go sometime great shot!
Whoops! Already did that, and have photos from that same location. Had a fine time at the park. Went hiking along the Colorado in the area near the entrance by crossing the foot-bridge. Got great photos along the massive rock wall. Brought back as big a red rock as I could carry, put it in the back or our Crosstrek. Now, in Rochester, NY, a beautiful Colorado River red rock souvenir adorns our front garden.

Natives know better.
I always had 2 five gallon containers of water in my Jeep as I wandered there and elsewhere in the SW .
Many other items as well.

So glad you learned a lesson with getting hurt. If your hiking into the hot desert, you might consider taking either fluids that contain electrolytes, such as gateraide, or taking salt pills before and during the hike.
Good thing you learned about the desert and live to tell about it. So many people over the years never made it back. Luckily I went through a desert survival class years ago. You also have a pretty subject to add to the beauty of the scenery.

As an additional thought, start your hike early. We did Arches a few years ago in Sept. Started our hike up to Delicate Arch at 5:30a and had 2 liters of water. It was 105 on the way down and there was no shade going in either direction. could have used more fluids. Great area, but be prepared.
For anyone doing these sorts of hikes, please do smaller walks first. Don't just start out in 100 degree weather without gradually working up to it. And as much as it's tempting, do not go to excess with water right away. It can upset the stomach. A lesson I used to tell race turn workers on really hot days is that if you don't need to Pee every hour you are not getting enough water. Just drink a little at a time all day long.
