"Azerbaijan’s capital wears its history well. Even today, the city’s medieval heart beats strongly, wrapped in thick arteries of 12th century stone. Yet around it, Baku has been supercharged with profits ploughed into European-style boulevards and Venetian gothic churches, earning it the nickname the ‘Paris of the Caucasus’."

When I was there in the 1980's, the whole city was covered in black oil residue from all the Russian leaking Oil wells in the Caspian Sea. Hardly any living vegetation.
