On April 15th I made a post of a great horned owl (GHO) I observed near an active red-tailed hawk (RTH) nest.
About a week later my wife and I observed two RTH chicks in the hawk nest. We were excited as we have been following this mated pair of hawks for 3+ years and this is the first year they had a successful hatch.
However, we were concerned with the GHO being observed nearby on several occasions.
Well, today, I confirmed some great news. The two chicks survived and are now about 5 weeks old. Mom was perched along side the chicks when I arrived today, but she soon flew off and continued to circle about 100 feet above me screeching the entire few minutes I was there. I was able to get a few pictures of the chicks and quickly left so Momma could relax and return. The dad was perched about 100 yards away observing the going ons.
I expect these chicks to fledge in the next week or so. That will be exciting to see I'm sure.
