I think I know what Bokeh is but I am don't know how to produce it. How do you make it happen?

Bokeh is the subjective quality of the out of focus blur. For the most part it is a function of the lens design and chosen aperture. You dont "make it happen".

... unless youre good at Photoshop ;-)

OK, seriously, you CAN "make it happen. Four parameters are involved.
• Focus closer to subject.
• Increase distance from subject to background.
• Wider apertures.
• Longer focal lengths.

The light, contrast, and nature of background detail has great influence.

Thaz EVERYTHING youll need to know. Now you invent some exercises and take notes concerning the four variables. Work in either M or A mode.

Theres plenty more info available, and certain Hogsters will certainly post it for the pleasure of confusing you. Keep a list of their usernames for future reference. (Some of their info will be dead wrong.) Another option is to simply ignore the issue of bokeh. Try that as well. Theres great benefit in just ignoring it as the least important aspect in photography.

And the focal distance to the subject, and from the subject to the background.

Here's a good article and explanation: http://www.rickdenney.com/bokeh_test.htm

Other variables mentioned by mwsilver & userid will serve to increase the amount of blur in front of or behind the subject. Having more blur aids in discerning it's quality....but does not change it's character.

I agree with userid that it is a minor issue in the appearance of most photographs. Most casual photographers do not understand the concept, let alone how to even pronounce the word!

You produce it with out of focus elements in the composition.

It's really a function of the lens, not the photographer. It depends on the optics and the aperture.

Bokeh is often an overused and misused technique. So learn to use it wisely. Many photographers use it because they think it makes their images look more "pro" like. So they use bokeh in every image they take. However, sometimes the most interesting subject matter is in the background. Putting the background out of focus is not always a good thing. Make sure you understand what the real subject is in your image, if you cannot then maybe everything needs to be in focus.

I believe that bokeh is usually an out--of-focus background produced by using a wide aperture with low depth of field, so it is basically controlled by your chosen aperture. Of course, other conditions and settings come into play.

Red, Bubbee. Bokeh is not having an out of focus backgroung. It has to do with the obscure quality of the blur NOT the quantity. You dont "use" bokeh. It is a character of the blur.

DoF was historically a very prized asset, which was a big part of the popularity of 35mm vs larger (mostly rollfilm) gear ... and NOBODY discussed "bokeh".
