Firmware update problems: D850 and D500

I successfully updated both my Nikon Df and my Nikon Zfc with no problems. However my first problems with both bodies is formatting a fresh SD card. I selected the SD as the primary slot and when I got to the format "yes" choice with the red background, I select "OK" but the screen sits there and gives no indication of the format completing. I started with fresh cards. I checked to make sure the card is unlocked. I even formatted the cards in my computer and then tried to format in the camera body but nothing happened. I also encountered difficulty getting the download to open the ".bin" file.
Since both bodies (D850 and D500) behave the same way, I assume I'm missing a step somewhere along the way. I watched two videos, including Steve Perry's, but still am stalled.
Help!

PS: I put fresh batteries in all bodies including these two problem ones.

Do you have the .bin file in the root directory?

Just to be sure...the download brings you a .exe file. You run that file on your computer to create the .bin file. I presume that you have done those steps and gotten that result.

Now I'll tell you a secret. There are two reasons that Nikon tells you to format the memory card. The first is that you don't use a card from another camera. The second is to make sure there are no old update files on the card. If you can safely and absolutely verify these conditions are met, you can skip the format step.

Yes, I deliberately checked that part of the instructions, which by the way worked for the other two bodies.

For those cameras with two card slots, take out the card you aren't using for the update.
I have an old low capacity SD card that use in most of the cameras when the need arises.

Nikon specifically says to format the SD cards in the camera and not the computer.

I first tried to format the card in the D850 and when the format tab remained red and did not report format successful, then I formatted in the computer and then tried to format in the D850 and got the same result.
Ditto for the D500.
Formatting in the Df and the Zfc went without a hitch.

Are you pressing the "OK" button on the left back or are you simply pressing the center of the multi selector?

You are very welcome. Now, just don't ask me how I was so sure that that was your problem!
Actually, I had a similar issue when I upgraded from my D7200 to the D500. Drove me nuts!! Then all of a sudden, the lightbulb went on.

Once the format worked then the bin file was assessable and the download went according to plan.
Thanks to all how pitched in.
