Photographing remote landscapes in Utah: Cummings Mesa

Weather kept on forcing us to change plans this spring. First in was too cold, too much snow, now we were faced with way too much snow on top of Paria Plateau and roads that were washed out and closed. So we decided to do an 18 day backpack on top of rarely visited Cummings Mesa on the Navajo Nation. Amazingly enough we carried all of our food for the entire trip up a trailless 1200 foot cliff and hiked on from there. We had been up there before but never for this long a period of time. Our plan was to hike it's edges looking for archaeology and having constant big views. In the lower left of the first photograph you can see our tents as we shuttled some of our food 700' up the cliff on day one. Buried it and retrieved it as we schlepped the rest of our food and gear up on day 2. The other 3 photos are a little exploratory side trip we took part way up the cliff. Stay tuned, it gets a LOT more spectacular...
