On March 18, 2022 University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas made history by becoming the first transgender woman to win an NCAA women's swimming competition

Closer to home... Currently in Fairfax County, Virginia: Fairfax County Public School's Regulation 2603 doesn't require 'parental participation' for student gender transitions and FCPS's policy also allows students to play sports and use locker rooms based on their gender identity.

Which translates to a fully developed male who has gone through puberty and has his (their) genitalia and is not on hormone blockers can now enter girls "person spaces" in Fairfax County Virginia without constraint (and at the protests of their girl/women teammates).

Note: I'm totally gender neutral and have no agenda (other than protecting my granddaughter's personal spaces). Am I missing something here? Are other UHH high school and colleges women's sports photographers comfortable with having University of Pennsylvania transgender woman swimmer Lia Thomas winning an NCAA women's swimming competition last spring? btw, Lia Thomas has gone through puberty and has enjoyed all the benefits from Testosterone a steroid hormone clinically associated with aggression and dominance in males.

So far I'm not seeing what I would expect from other's in sports photographic arena of women's sports. Apathy?

A little history on the use of male hormones by female athletes
Andrea Pollack, who captured two Olympic gold medals with the 1976 East German women's swimming team, died in March of cancer at age 57. Like other members of that team, she was systematically doped as a teenager with Oral-Turinabol, an anabolic steroid created by the state-run company Jenapharm.

Medical side note: The effects of the drug Turinabol on the body are similar to the effects of other anabolic steroids, like the ability to stimulate muscle growth by stimulating the release of testosterone in the body, which in turn causes the growth of muscle tissue.

Another side note: East German female athlete became "Trans"
Heidi Krieger, the 1986 European women's shot-put champion, became Andreas Krieger after a sex-change operation in 1997. He says (he/she/they) (required pronouns) had been fed so many steroids by his coaches without his knowledge that physical and emotional problems began. The young woman's physique changed drastically, as did her feelings.

Are we potential compromising our children's long term health and well being here?
Silence on this issue I personally find unacceptable at this juncture.
Please think logically (not emotionally) about the recent dramatic change in direction of women's sports.
Thank you...

IMO, the Lia Thomas situation is a travesty. Athletes are prohibited from taking performance enhancing drugs. Gender altering drugs should also be prohibited for athletes.
I’ll hold off commenting on locker room issues lest I be sent to the attic.

Thank you for being proactive here Dannj, believe we may be on the same page here.

Here is a summery of a recent Medical Journal article on the circulating testosterone concentrations between male/female individuals who have gone through puberty.
Maybe let's be clear about what a level playing field in sporting events actually is.

"Elite athletic competitions have separate male and female events due to men’s physical advantages in strength, speed, and endurance so that a protected female category with objective entry criteria is required. Prior to puberty, there is no sex difference in circulating testosterone concentrations or athletic performance, but from puberty onward a clear sex difference in athletic performance emerges as circulating testosterone concentrations rise in men because testes produce 30 times more testosterone than before puberty with circulating testosterone exceeding 15-fold that of women at any age. There is a wide sex difference in circulating testosterone concentrations and a reproducible dose-response relationship between circulating testosterone and muscle mass and strength as well as circulating hemoglobin in both men and women. These dichotomies largely account for the sex differences in muscle mass and strength and circulating hemoglobin levels that result in at least an 8% to 12% ergogenic advantage in men."

Say NO! to trans athletes. If they want to compete, let them form their own leagues.

I believe a lot of states and maybe the NCAA are starting to impose regulations against former females who have transitioned to male past puberty are not allowed to compete. I hope to see more of this as I find it unfair. The UPenn situation was a joke.
Maybe going forward, in high shcool, college, the Olympics- there will be a male, female, and "other" category?

Yes I live in Kansas and we just passed laws to that effect. Also along with that we have a new law for bathrooms also. Our lovely Liberal Governor vetoed the laws but or wonderful senate leaders overrode her. LOVE IT!!!! Thanks

It seems very unfair that biological males are competing against biological females. If this continues it will be the end of female sports.

Bill female sports began in earnest 50 years ago with the implementation of Title IX...

Title IX is a Federal civil rights law that was passed in 1972 as part of the Education Amendments of that year. Its main aim is to prevent sex-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal funding, such as higher education institutions, local school districts, museum programs, and libraries. These institutions must provide equal treatment across all areas of work, to both students and employees. Otherwise, they risk losing federal funding for not complying with federal law.

More over the implementation of Title IX led to strong institutional change. Women in sports, at both the elementary and higher education levels, benefited from greater access to team sports and resources. Prior to Title IX, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) did not host athletic championships for female teams. Women also failed to receive athletic scholarships for colleges and universities. Team doctors, insurance, and equal access to athletic facilities were lacking for collegiate women’s sports teams. However, Title IX ensured larger amounts of funding were destined for such activities, which not only ensured more safety and support for female athletes, but also increased female participation in sports. The Women’s Sports Foundation estimates that, as of 2016, there was a β€œ545% increase of women playing college sports and a 990% increase of women playing high school sports” thanks to Title IX.

Enter the dragon! On July 21, 2014, President Obama signed Executive Order 13672, adding "gender identity" to the categories protected against discrimination in hiring in the federal civilian workforce and both "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the categories protected against discrimination in hiring and employment.
This is the Executive Order (13672) which opened the door to allow transgender "women" into Women's Sports. Money changes everything! Failure to comply? Lose your Federal Funding, thus no organization has had the courage to challenge the madness of allowing fully developed males to compete against females. While there has been a concerted effort to dance around this by using hormone levels as a diagnostic this in it's self if ludicrous since any male who has passed through puberty will have benefited from a massive increase in not only muscle mass but also circulating hemoglobin (think aerobic endurance here).

Bill sadly we stand on the threshold of the largest paradox of possibly this century... There are no good or equable solutions. Personally I'm gender neutral on this topic since I see no clear way forward, however I'm adamant and unwavering that no fully intact male should be allowed in the same dressing room where young female adults have to disrobe to change into their team uniforms.

I work with many many young women as a makeup artist and photographer both on location and studio assignments. These young ladies hope to work as "Agency Represented" fashion and beauty models. And I refuse to collaborate with them unless they are accompanied by a parent or responsible adult (no exceptions) experience is a brutal teacher. Young girls are so easily traumatize by being exposed naked to males. This in a "bridge too far" I will defend the sanctity of young women's right to privacy regardless of any and all Amendments to Title IX.

Let's hope that calm minds and objective wisdom prevails here...
