I haven't really been doing much with the camera lately and I really need to get out. When I bought my first DSLR I was really taken by Macro, my first macro lens was the old Canon 100mm f/2.8 from the 90's, all metal with the telescoping barrel, I still have one just for nostalgia's sake. Never happy with 1:1 macro I soon learned to shoot with reversed lenses and had a lot of fun along the way. Now days I live in the mountains and shoot mostly landscapes...

At any rate, I was transferring files from an old computer to a new one and came across some of my old macro shots that I thought I might share here again because I am pretty certain that I have not posted these in the last few years. With the exception of the last image these were all taken with a 28 mm lens reversed onto tubes which yields about 4:1 magnification and then they were cropped which of course yields even greater magnification.

Wow! I haven't tried lens reversing yet but recently bought a bellows and an appropriate lens to give it a try. And a nice table-top tripod. Off to the races pretty soon!
Really nice photos!!

Thanks guys, I really don't do much macro anymore, when everyone went to focus stacking I threw in the towel because I don't use tripods or rails and honestly even getting shots like those above in the wild takes time and patience not to mention my flash rig is a bit extravagant and a pain in the butt to use.

Anyway, it was fun to post these.

Phenomenal high mag photos, Blurryeyed. How do you manage to get that close to a bee to capture it with the reversed lens on extension tube? Your tip would be greatly appreciated. I love playing with reversed lens macro, too.

Bees can find sugar anywhere, I made simple syrup (sugar/water) and poured some on the ground and the bees came. If you are into reversed lens macro a mirrorless camera is a game changer, the other day I mounted my set up for the first time in years to shoot a little jumper on my deck and it was totally different than shooting with a DSLR. Because the mirrorless cameras show exposure it was no problem to see the jumper through the stopped down lens.

Hi Blurryeyed. Thanks much for the tips! Playing around with reversed lenses + extension tubes is a heck of a lot of fun. Was your working distance to the bees on the order of just a few centimeters? How do you manage to grab shots of bees from that close a distance without scaring them off?
