I took this photo about 45 years ago at a place on the outskirts of Indianapolis that recycled railcars. These cars apparently hauled Peabody Coal to the powerplants that supplied electricity to Indianapolis.

We still have some of them in our region, although often they are built for rotary unloaders.

Thanks for posting this. There is a famous John Prine song called Paradise about the effects of strip mining in Kentucky. "Daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg county down by the Green River where Paradise lays, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking, Mr Peabody's coal train has done hauled it all away">

I’m not sure this involved Kentucky. A lot of southern Indiana coal was used to generate electricity {before the rules were changed}. A coal strike shut down the entire region when I was in Grad School about forty years ago.

Only in the sense that the song was about the Peabody Coal company which as the largest coal company in the United States had operations in many states including Kentucky. John Prine, who wrote the song about actions of the Peabody Company (now Peabody Energy) was born and raised in Maywood, Ill, but often travelled with his family to visit family in Kentucky near the coal fields where his family originally from. My comment was only to say that the Peabody Coal car reminded me of a somewhat well known modern folk song about the company's activities in Kentucky. Thanks for posting the image. It does another important thing and that is being a visual record past places and things. You captured an image of a Peabody coal car from the past and that is good to have.
