We took a tour of Colon, Panama and came across this old building which we thought might be an abandoned textile warehouse or something. Not abandoned at all. It is a fully functional 3rd world prison. You can bet there are hard core cases here and there are no extra creature comforts to spoil the dregs of society in Panama. If you zoom in on several windows you can get a feel for the prisoner life and some of the dwellers visible. The nicest part of the place seems to be the high tower for guards to draw a bead on escapees.
Not unlike the housing slums we saw in Panama City on a stopover there in 2019. Contrasted in sharp relief with the modern luxury high-rises a few blocks away.

Eye opening. But like you said it's for the dregs of society. If you can't do the time don't do the crime. I'm sure they get A/C, 3 hots, a cot and cable TV.

In Panama in the 70's for joint ops - the police shot a man climbing the fence at the military base - signs were posted - do not climb on the fence - violators will be shot - they are true to their word... Was in Spain when Franco was in power - the police had the same type of authority but would use not lethal methods for first attempt... Both countries had a very low crime rate at the time - they don't coddle the bad guys...

No kidding. It is amazing the contrasts in relatively small area.
Thanks! I can't imagine being put in a place like that and not be able to speak the local language. How many have died in that place? Numbers would seem staggering.

We may have to invoke they same kind of tough justice with the criminal elements. We still live in the wild west. The only thing that has changed is technology.

I was in Panama in the early to mid seventies and lived near Colon (Coco Solo). At that time I was friends with the Chief of Police of Panama and the bad prison was on the island of Isla Coiba which is now a vacation area. I don't remember those in the photo but it has been a few years since I was in Colon. Planning to go back before long. Thanks for the photos.

You are welcome. From what we could see from the bus, the area immediately around the prison had some pretty bad conditions surrounding it. Not a place to be alone at day or night. There were alot of abandoned old fire engines near the prison which seemed out of place.
