Went fishing for the last week or so to Holter Reservoir and then over to Lake Francis. Here are some landscape shots from Holter. We caught a few rainbow trout at Holter and a good amount of walleye from Lake Francis...so the freezer is starting to get restocked!
Holter Reservoir is known as the "Gates of the Mountains" and was named by Lewis and Clark. Captain Lewis wrote on July 19, 1805:
this evening we entered much the most remarkable clifts that we have yet seen. these clifts rise from the waters edge on either side perpendicularly to the height of 1200 feet. ... the river appears to have forced its way through this immense body of solid rock for the distance of 5-3/4 Miles ... I called it the gates of the rocky mountains.
You can read more on this area here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gates_of_the_Mountains_WildernessBut this area is also known for the Mann Gulch Fire back in 1949 when 13 smokejumpers lost their lives in a wildfire -

Gates of the Mountains - if you drive your boat from left to right...the rock cliff on the left looks like it closes and connects with the right side of the cliffs...hence the name "Gates of the Mountains"

Wonderful images of some beautiful country. Nice catch in that last one. Thanks for the ride along!
That's beautiful country. Really nice images.
Beautiful, Cindy. You guys sure do know how to catch fish, too.
Very nice photos! I've read the Journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition and wondered where the "Gates" were. Now I know and it's on my bucket list! Thank you for that!
If I show up on your doorstep some day will you take me fishing??

Of course I would take ya fishing! If you get to Holter, they do offer a boat tour that gives you the experience of the Gates closing and opening...it's worth the time to do it.
