After you have a good selection try using Command B (Ctrl B on a PC) which brings up the expand/shrink selection option. Then shrink the selection by 2 or 3 pixels to eliminate any highlights or fringing around the edges. This technique helps in general masking situations as well as for cutouts.

Also, you can use the clone tool, and set the blend mode on the tool to Darken/Lighten and select a color on the edge of the bird and paint over the fringes. If you have a mask on the bird, you don't need worry about painting outside the lines (edges) as the mask hides what isn't the bird. This is super easy on solid edges like this bird, and a bit more work on things like intricate tree leaves and such, but works well. I also think the bird is a bit, very little bit, too sharp and some work could be done to soften it a wee, wee bit. Really though, looks pretty darn good to me. The purple fringe however is a dead giveaway to a composted scene.

Nicely done regardless of the process used to create it.

Watlington Hill view with Red Kite.

The view from the hill is one I see frequently as I often take a walk around there. I took many shots of the numerous Red Kites around the same time. Fortunately, I got one reasonably close and sharp. It's my best yet at cutting and pasting a selection and I'm quite pleased. I see it as a complete image, but some in the family see it as 'photoshopped'.

Comments welcome.

Good shot. Persistence pays off!

It is photoshopped. But I wouldn't know if you didn't disclose it. Excellent work.

I don't, but even if someone might see this as having some "photoshopped" character, it's still a work of art. VERY nice!

Calendar worthy (I could enjoy seeing it repeatedly).

Many thanks for all the comments. I've really struggled with selections previously only making very basic ones. Why everything clicked this time I'm not sure but discovering the foreground and background buttons in the refine option was a game changer.

I'll be sure to try ECOBINS suggestion in the near future, seems like that might be the icing on the cake - especially if (I suspect) I take the selection brush down a notch or two to maybe 10 pixels.

Those folks who look at the pictures and never read the comments probably wouldn't have thought Photoshop. It looks natural to me.
Well done!
