Greetings. Nikon has a firmware upgrade for the D850. Never having done this before, is a bit daunting. Does anyone have recommendations please! There is no loca l camera shop so it's do it on my own. Thanks!

This is where you start

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/359/D850.html

The instructions seem daunting, but if you follow the them one step at a time they are pretty easy. I do them with only one memory card in the camera, and start by formatting that card in camera.

Click on Firmware, then D850 Firmware / View download page

Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired.
Download F-D850-V130W.exe to the folder created in Step 1.
Run F-D850-V130W.exe to extract the following file to a folder named “D850Update”:
• D850_0130.bin (the camera firmware)
Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D850_0130.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
Insert the memory card into the slot currently selected as the primary slot on the camera and turn the camera on.
Select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
Confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.

Bill_de Thank you for your quick reply. I did read the instructions prior to posting but my concern is Murphys Law: how to fix a problem if one occurs. Hoping that is not the case but one needs to be prepared for possible bumps in the road. It doesn't seem like this upgrade is that important so I might just not install it. Your help is appreciated.

One thing that may not be perfectly clear is that this all has to be done on the card that is set up as the Primary Card on your camera. If you have questions about which one that is, the answer can be found on the first page of your Shooting Menu.

I understand your apprehension. If you decide to go ahead with and something goes wrong, typically because you skipped something, you just start over. But if the update doesn't look like it improves anything, ignore it. Everything will be there when the next update shows up.

That is why I said I always do the updates with one card in the camera. It becomes the primary card.

So what "improvements" does it provide? I've had my D850 for about three years and have never done an update.

And the exact improvements depend on what firmware you currently have. If you've never done an update, that depends on when your camera was made. Original production D850s couldn't use CFE cards as delivered. Later ones could.

Where did you find the d850 firmware upgrade? I find nothing current on Nikon's website. Most recent is 1/19/2023

That is the most recent, but since the OP has never done an update it would be new to him. That's my guess anyway.

Firmware updates are very easy.

Just make sure you have a full battery and do not turn off the power on your camera until it is complete. The camera will let you know when it is complete.

1. Down load the zip file from the Nikon site.
2. Extract the file into a location you can easily find it.
You can format the card in your camera if you like, I have not done that, but some may recommend that
3. Copy the extracted file to the root directory of the card you will use.
4. Put the card in the camera
5. Go to me you and look for firmware version
It will ask you if you want to update, select yes
It will do the rest.
Very easy.
You got this!!
