Like oil slick on water... Beautiful colors random. Well captured Rudolf

Birefringence can be defined as the optical characters of a material having a refractive index which relies on the polarization and propagation direction of light (Stein & Norris, 1956). From: Methods in Microbiology, 2018

Fascinating results. I'm guessing, but it seems like you use a combination of, as you say, birefringence, with oil drop photography. Would you care to share more about your technique?

Material list: Extra LED Monitor screen( facing up), computer (use white for a desktop home screen), VGA cable, acetate/polystyrene plastics (insert under the Petre dish), Petre dish (you will need a 2" elevated stand), water/ oil (vegetable oil works fine), 100mm macro lens, circular polarizer filter (turn as to achieve contrast), and a tripod. A lot of trial and error, be patient.

Good information - thanks! I've previously done a little oil drop photography where I've used an out-of-focus colored background like magazine photos, to get the color variations in the drops. As I read your response, looks like the white from the monitor backlights the droplets, and color variation is provided by the CP. I like your results a lot better. Am I on the right track?

Interesting results. Have you tried it with a polarizing filter on the lens. To see what you come up with.

Thx. I've got a white LED light table (for tracing and viewing slides) I'm going to try in lieu of the inverted monitor. I'll let you know how it goes when I can get around to trying it.

Amazing results. I love the colours, clarity and depth of these. Think you might be starting an interesting string from other folk on here!

The use of a circular polarizing lens (used by digital cameras) is the only way to achieve these types of results.
