i have no idea what kind of butterfly it is and need an id from an intelligent and well informed hog!

As for the butterfly, that is the very rare, from Georgia, Beaded Butterfly in all its glory. They are not common and in fact that is the only known photograph of one. But it is indeed very lovely and the photo, something to cherish.

Well, texan. I hate to disappoint you and Dennis but it's obviously the well known uncommon flutterby. You are fortunate to have seen one and even more fortunate to have a photograph. Dennis got that right, it's the only known photograph of one not in captivity! Might be worth a lot of money!
