I have wimberley arca Swiss lens plates on my Sony telephoto lenses. I also use Black rapid straps that I connect to the wimberley plates via a threaded swivel when I want to hand hold and carry these lenses compared to having them mounted on a gimbal head. Unfortunately when I want to make the switch between hand holding vs tripod I need to unscrew the swivel from the Wimberly plate, which is time consuming. So I am looking for a quick release swivel to replace the threaded swivel current on the black rapid strap. I have looked at QD quick release devises, but I am not sure they are compatible with Wimberley plates. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I use one of these ordered from B& H. Don't know the part number. It was quite a while ago. I use the Peak Design anchor system attached to a small spring-loaded snap clip. Fold out for strap use & fold down for the tripod.

No, a QD connector does not work on plates with traditional screw holes. And, most plates and tripod feet that accommodate standard screw attachments do not have QD sockets, although you do need to check. Converting to QD is worthwhile, but it may require an investment in hardware. Ideally, you have just a few « everyday » long lenses that will need the new plate/foot, and you would probably want one for the camera body as well.

I was out just this morning, shooting birds, mostly shooting handheld, but at one point i needed to use my monopod. Just unclipped the QD connecter from the lens foot and snapped it onto the camera (for safety), and clamped the lens onto the monopod. Easy.

With a bit more research, I think I have concluded the Wimberley lens foot replacements will not accommodate QD connectors. But, Really Right Stuff does have them. Guess I am going to have to replace the Wimberley lens feet. If others have different suggestions, I would love to hear them. To those who responded, thank you.

IF I understand, you could attach (thread) the black Rapid swivel to an A/S receiver - https://www.ebay.com/itm/314256068803 - and then attach to the lens foot for carrying and remove for tripod/gimbal ??

I agree Larry, that is an option. My fear on this approach being sure to check the A/S clamp regularly and wonder whether the QD option is safer. Should I be paranoid?

I understand your concern ! ......I think DaveO uses a system like this - you might PM him ......

You might want to use a pliers to tighten - just to ease your mind !

I always try to carry a pocket multi-tool with me in the field - you never know what might happen !

Good point re the tools. But regarding a QD setup, I would rather have something quick and safe. These QD setups seem to provide both. But it means I am going to have to replace at least a couple of my Wimberley feet. Have a great day!

The Arca-Swiss system of plates and platforms is a "QD" or "quick detach" or "QR/quick release" system. Wimberley is just one of dozens of manufacturers who make products that are Arca-Swiss QR compatible. (Note: Arca-Swiss also makes other products.)

Let me make sure I understand what you're asking....

First, as I understand it, you have a Wimberley lens plate on the tripod mounting foot of your lens. One or more screws hold that A/S plate in place.

Then it sounds as if you're attaching a carrying strap to that lens plate via a 1/4" hole drilled in it (some A/S camera and lens plates provide that).

Now you are wondering if you should instead use a "platform" on the end of the strap, to more easily attach it to the plate on the lens?

And if you do that, you're wondering whether to use the type of platform that has a screw knob to tighten, or the type that uses a lever?

Frankly, I would paranoid! I'd never rely on any part of this system to attach a carrying strap! If I understand correctly what you are trying to do, it means a single point of connection, with multiple possible points of failure. The plate attaches to the lens, the strap attaches to the plate... two possible points of failure. Or, the plate attached to the lens, the quick release platform attached to the plate, the strap attached to the QR platform... three possible points of failure. The entire weight of the camera and lens supported by three or four threads in an aluminum plate?

I use straps that attach to the lugs on my cameras instead. My two largest lenses also have lugs and straps installed. All my straps are Op/Tech and each has its own quick release buckles. This allows me to remove most of the carrying strap, leaving just a couple short pieces on the camera or lens. Note: I use their Velcro safety devices on the QR buckles as a precaution, although this means they're no longer "quick release". Each strap has two attachment points... and none of the attachment points are screws or knobs or levers that might be loosened accidentally. The straps on my two lenses are adjusted for length to match the straps on the camera, so that I can put both straps on my shoulder when carrying them... four points of connection.

Let me try this again. For my large Sony lenses (600/f4, 400/f2.8, 200-600, 100-400 and 7-200 f/2.8) I have replace the factory lens feet with Wimberley lens feet designed for each lens. The Wimberley lens feet have threaded holes in the bottom to accommodate different thread sizes. The Black Rapid strap that I use has a threaded end that can be screwed into the Wimberley replacement foot. For wildlife photography, the process of removing the black rapid strap from the lens so it can be placed on a gimbal head on my can be time can be time consuming, potentially causing failure to catch wildlife action. I am looking for something faster to disconnect and reconnect the strap to the camera. The QD fasteners seem to fit the bill, but the Wimberley replacement feet are not made with a QD fitting on the plate. So I am asking for advise on option. What you have described in your response for me is hard to envision. A picture would be better than 1,000 words. Thanks for the response and I hope this clears it up what I am trying to evaluate.

In my mind you could sandwich a flat plate like this - https://www.ebay.com/itm/314466428824?hash=item4937a8e798:g:sWgAAOSwn9JkEbbw&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4IZj6Ee0XCNy4xgNs2YMUg1B%2FBPhbwxn5z7w1%2B2D7s1vwjPDfC%2BPKsNLnAdyvqGZSsPqgfrmcrEp4pT3%2F6MOmwZ6eeQIIUQ4NqNwiju6IFr43a68B62Xup9V2SI406o2qP1UJfY1%2FmKfCOcniHmRBkN196kj%2Bnhc%2BSfB2Kpo3gIOquH9KXIhWb8TD9LC5NTo0OiQtaayoD6QMakelJzr3kCbtUm4orC1IP3Bwm40hv%2FGVvppLD117W5uSZoOmgIlfYdYu%2BcPaHOz9sZ%2B%2BCwwTdbtAR9fy8TAmkIgAMfgFci9%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_b6r575YQ

in between the tripod collar foot and an A/S plate - where you then could attach your strap to this flat plate and still have A/S ready for tripod head......

Look at the Really Right Stuff Quick Release Plates. They also have Quick release plates with screw locks. You can attach this to your Black Rapid connector. This will then lock onto your Wimberly plate. Both the RRS and Wimberly are arc swiss compatable.

It does not matter how "many" possible points of failure, the weakest one will fail first
