A very thoughtful article on gun violence in the US

I don't generally initiate posts in this section, but I ran across this article explaining different cultural norms in different regions of the US based on early immigration patterns from different regions of Europe, which not only explain differing attitude toward guns, but in almost all other areas of our national attitudes and lifestyles. Not trying to start any arguments, but to understand what lies at the root of our great differences.

Thanks for posting. I've lived in NYC most of my life and found it to be a great city offering great opportunities. I've always tried to tell people from outside that it's safe here but many are to afraid to take a chance. This article does a great job. Thanks for the post.

I love NYC. In the 70s it was a rough town, but does not seem so today.

It's an interesting theory, but a lot of academic effort put into a study like this does not necessarily land on target. It is a fact that more than 50% of the homicides in America can be attributed to black on black crime, that is a fact supported by FBI reporting. If you take a look at the distribution of where b****s live in the United States you will find that 56% of b****s live in the south, what the Politico article calls the Deep South and Greater Appalachia are also the two most deadly regions studied and he focuses on the attitudes of the original settlers of these areas. It is easy to buy into such a simple explanation and believe me I live in these regions of the country and have met a lot of hardheaded, don't tread on me types, but he neglects other important factors when considering gun violence that have little to do with the hypothesis of the study that he has put so much effort into.

I have little problem with the author's numbers, but I seriously think his study is flawed as he attributes the violence to the country of origin of the original settlers and the cultural attitudes that developed in those regions while completely ignoring race and the implications of race in America's gun violence problem. What I see in your linked article is a big brain that misses the target.
