Question for Prius Drivers

A friend bought a Prius hybrid a few months ago. Yesterday, he told me he was surprised at how aggressive drivers were toward him. They tailgate and cut him off. He's been driving for decades, and he noticed this after driving the Prius. I know there are some people who don't like hybrids or EVs, but is type of aggression common?

Unless you're driving 20+ mph over the limit then you'll likely to be tailgated! We're in RI now and the tailgating here is worse than in PA and NY. My daughter is guilty of it also.

I thought tailgating was bad in Jackson Wyoming until I went to Houston...after all horses can only pull a buggy so fast.

In my experience, tailgating is a problem everywhere. Traveling with a travel trailer, I experience it more than I like - and since they can't see around the trailer, they don't know what's coming up so I have a rear facing camera on the trailer so I can see what's going on behind me. I don't want to have a vehicle plow into my trailer if I have to stop.

The two states I feel are the worst are Texas and Georgia - it's bad enough when the locals do it, but in these states even the LEO's tailgate and get very upset when you slow down to a crawl to let them pass. In GA, I actually pulled off and stopped before a tailgater would go around me. I have a friend there who is a LEO and he said they like to follow so if there's a speed trap, the 1st car will be pulled over and the rest can continue on - gotta laugh at their thought process... I had a TX State Trooper pass me on the right (on the shoulder) even though there was no oncoming traffic and I was doing the speed limit. About 20 miles down the road, I pulled up beside him at a gas station where he was getting fuel and having coffee - yup, real emergency there...

I had one for several years. The only aggression I had was from heroes on Harleys. Most of them think they own the road.

I get pickup drivers who must pass me even if I'm 5-10 mph over the limit. We live in a conservative rural area, and I never experienced that as much when I drove a 2500HD. Maybe it's just a perceptual bias, but I do seem to get more aggression from certain people.

In my experience, tailgating is a problem everywhe... (show quote)

A tailgating LEO is the worst! What should you do, speed up?!

I wonder if a driver has ever gotten a ticket for "following too close"? I maintain three seconds spacing.

Jerry,
Funny you should ask???
I was traveling westbound, at rush hour on the Tappan Zee bridge and a patrol car was trying to get through traffic going to an emergency and when I pulled over and I let him pass, I followed right behind him, he took exception to that and stopped and asked for my license, said to see him on the other side at the clearing there where he was headed to... I did, he gave me a ticket that I was following too closely to an emergency vehicle... I didn't even try to fight the ticket, which I could have, I just paid the fine... I guess he was having a bad day...

In Southern New England, the speed limit seems to be 15-20 above the signed limit. Otherwise you'll get pushed from behind. I don't drive much in other regions so I can't comment on those areas.

I had people tailgating my pickup truck too. Don't notice any difference between the tailgating in the truck or the Prius.

I read somewhere that if you cut off a Prius, it will brake and let you in.

Not a Prius, a Tesla

If the Prius is in cruise control and the sensors are not disabled by road crud a car cutting in front of the Prius will cause the Prius to apply the brakes.

If the Prius is being driven manually it’s up to the driver.

My 2005 Prius didn’t have that version of cruise control which is one of the reasons I traded it for a 2017 model.

And when I first read that statement it was referring to a Tesla.

Your right - lot’s of vehicles with adaptive cruise control will brake under those circumstances. Since one never knows if the cruise is on or off, better not to cut them off and find out

Prius has a similar collision avoidance system to Tesla.
