A while back I had my laptop flushed and Win 10 reinstalled by a coworker. Not sure if it's relevant but the laptop is approximately 5 years old and came from HP.

Since then the SD card slot doesn't work. When a card is inserted, it makes the sound but won't come up in the file menu.

I have tried to upload the driver, there doesn't seem to be one for a card reader. I have tried assigning a drive letter but something is preventing that from happening because no YouTube video has been able to restore functionality.

Card readers plugged into the USB ports work fine but it would be nice to just put the card in. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Is the internal reader compatible with the exact type and formatting scheme of your SD cards? Some older readers do not read SDXC cards formatted with ExFAT. That's a hardware (chip) limitation, not a driver limitation.

Hello
Well it could be a driver issue or a bad card reader
Any chance you can provide laptop Model #
1. Check the driver
2. Try different sd cards
3. If it still fails could be bad

Go into the general file manager and on the left side of the window, scroll down to the drive that it has a name. Click on that drive name ( e: f: or G: or what ever ) and double click on that drive, you should be able to see it. I hope...good luck!

Bill and Alvin, it worked fine before the reinstallation of Windows 10 and as mentioned, the computer makes a tone like it knows the card has been inserted but there is no drive letter to click on in the file manager. It's bizarre!

13, I have tried different ways to make Windows recognize the card reader but nothing will bring up a drive designation.

It's not the end of the world guys but rather an inconvenience and as mentioned, the same cards work just fine in a card reader that is plugged in any USB port. Stuff like this just bugs me...

In that case, I'd take it back to the guy who reinstalled Win10 and tell him to find the missing link...

I would Bill, but he no longer works here. The last time that I checked it is a Federal offense to introduce drugs into a correctional facility.

You get what you pay for, right?

Did your friend use a company Windows source? It may not have included the driver for your SD card reader. Open Control Panel, then click Device Manager. Look for Unknown Devices. If there are some, right-click each and select remove. Shut down. Start up (better than Restart). Win10 should have the drivers you need. If not you will need to visit the Support site of your laptop's maker. Good luck!

I'm not sure but I will definitely try your suggestion, thanks!

I have been to the HP website but due to the laptop's age, they did not make it easy to find a driver and they certainly weren't going to talk to me without funds changing hands...

HP used to have drivers on their website for very old computers but not any more now. It's a shame.

That is the sad part. It's old but not "ancient" and still does what I need it to do so I don't feel real compelled to upgrade just because it is a popular fad and I am not into keeping up with the Jones's.

Ironically, my son spent somewhere around $3,500.00 for a custom built gaming computer and if the truth be told, I'm not impressed with the 6 core i7 processor that's inside. At the end of the day it's not that much faster than the i5 in my laptop.

Still, the thing with the card slot is kind of annoying.

Problem has been solved.

I have no idea why but I went on the HP website last week and this time I was shown the area where drive downloads are available. This did not happen on the first go around.

Anyway, the driver fr a Realtek card reader was downloaded and installed and it works again.

Great! Few peripherals work without a driver.

This is true Bill but why it disappeared to begin with was a mystery. I did the reload of Windows last time and it worked fine. On this go around everything worked but the card slot.

I can't function without that function.

There are so many variables with computers, it is hard to know why a glitch occurred that prevented the driver installation. I am always happy when I find a way to restore it to normal function. I don't waste much thought on why it didn't work the first time. That's for the engineers...
