Alas, Microsoft has chosen to make the selection of the documents file hidden in Windows 11. How could this possibly be an improvement to my already confusion about filing in general?

Have you looked under C:/users/*your user name*/documents or in the One Drive folder? By default, unless you’re clever enough to disable it on start up, windows 11 stores documents (including any on the desktop as well as as your .pst file if you use Outlook) in the One Drive folder, which it attempts (unless you stop it) to mirror to the Microsoft cloud. Some may find this an easy way to keep a cloud DR copy of your data (which, in general, I endorse), but I found it intrusive, and it is a bitc$ to get rid of it.

I keep hearing all these horror stories about all the troubles people are having with Windows 10 & 11 brings back memories of Windows ME & Vista. Number one and number two worst windows programs ever created. My wife went from 7 to 10 a few months after it came out and has had trouble with it since. I was lucky enough to hang on to Windows 7. I have a couple of highly rated virus programs that have worm, Trojan, ransom hacking sites, email protection and all the rest.
I know M/S doesn't support 7 any longer but I don't think they did such a hot job of that either. I have a techy friend that I think is the King of the Geeks that rewrote several of M/S support programs and he said it was nothing. I expect 7 to crash then I'll go to something completely different like Linux or maybe the spymaster of all time Chrome OS

Even I can tell I'm babbling so I'll quite - Yall have a good day

Don't forget the Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 add-on: Microsoft Bob. Perhaps the worst of all time.

Windows 10 is the best of all the Windows versions yet - absolutely NO problems, and Windows Defender is all you need for protection (along with being halfway intelligent about what you're doing!).

I have Windows 10, have been using it for several years with very little problem. Most of the problems I've had were either 3rd party software or hardware-related. FWIW Peter Norton himself admitted that his anti-virus software picks up only about 40% of viruses. Windows Defender does better than that and it's free with Windows.

My wife has so much trouble with Windows 10 and she needs a fast computer with a large amount of memory. She is still working on her own as a professional genealogist and just can't find the time to take it all apart or transfer her programs to a new computer

What exactly are her issues? Maybe we can help. Windows 10 is probably the best release of Windows yet. And with the exception of trying to store all my docs into One Drive and sync them to the cloud (which I’ve disabled), I’ve had no issues with my one Win 11 machine.

Yup, The "shortcut" is to "documents", but not "c:\user\documents\..." -- I hate those shortcuts..... Redundant.
I cannot "write" to a shortcut <directory>, but if I explicitly say this PC- c:\users\<place I want to go>, it allows me to put a file there.
I'd like to remove all the WIN 11 "shortcuts"......
BUT, will it delete the "real" directory?????

No if it’s really just a short cut to a folder and not the folder itself. For example, I actually keep a couple of constantly used actual folders on my desktop, but I also have shortcuts to executables for applications. Of course, there is a distinction between a directory and a folder, but many/most of us use it interchangeably. BTW, you’re correct on the backslash for Windows - just keep forgetting I’m not in a Unix world.

Yes, directory and folder are synonymous.
BUT, Windows "shortcuts" in Explorer on 11 are different.....
The don't contain the same files as the "primary" my documents folder.

I want "<My> Documents" to be My Documents, ALL OF THEM, one folder(directory), not some in this place, most in another, each having the same name..... "Documents"

I am in 100% agreement. My hardware at the present does not support WIN 11, so I am still using WIN 10 and I think it is the best Microsoft OS ever, and I have been a Microsoft user since the early DOS days. With WIN 10 and MS Defender, I have never had a crash, a virus infection or any other of the issues that I read about here. With some of the early versions of Windows such as 95, XP, and even Windows 7 these were common problems.

But this reliability comes at a cost - discipline. I do NOT load every app or goofy software program that comes along. I verify that ANY program I load is from a trusted source not just something I found on the net. I run virus checks on a regular basis and constantly keep my hard drive clean of junk files and old unused programs or apps. I have a strict system of folders and files in which I store my info. You must have some sort of system to keep your files organized or you will have problems. This applies to MS and Apple computers. My wife has an Apple Mac and I am constantly having to find lost files for her since she refuses to exercise any discipline in maintaining her computer.

A computer is like any other tool, take care of it and use it properly or it will fail at some point. This applies to any computer and any operating system.

Maybe I missed it but that is the very best way to find documents that work easily for the many times I need gp to get there

Actually, I never use a shortcut to a folder, just to executables. Regarding directories vs folders, they are actually different even though we often refer to them in the same way. The main difference is that a folder is a logical concept that does not necessarily map to a physical directory. A directory is an file system object. A folder is a GUI object. . https://www.baeldung.com/cs/directories-vs-folders
