They opened a huge base there under the ice, powered by a nuclear reactor. They had plans for making it into a missile base, but the pressure of the ice kept causing problems - collapsing the tunnels. They abandoned it around 1962, leaving everything behind.
Hogwash indeed. By international treaty of many, many years' standing no country "owns" Antarctica and there will never be military bases placed there by any country. It is the one and only continent on earth which anyone can go to without a visa or government authorization. It is a free zone that is open to scientific study by anyone who has the means and desire to go there. There have never been and never will be any military installations there.
